What are the best space (exploration) games?

Keep an eye out for terra invicta.
Simple Rockets 2
Kerbal obvs
Never played surviving mars but apparently its ok
XO has an interesting world but not really "exploration"
no mans sky apparently?
dont bother with Elite Dangerous even though they claim to have exploration

Children of a Dead Earth

whats wrong with E:D? i was about to get it for my vr set

Its good and got a lot of good stuff but I wouldn't call it an exploration game, that's all. Apparently it's transcendent with VR, I only have a screen.

Also try star wars squadrons and Dirt Rally for VR.

Space Engine is light on the game side but the exploration bit is good.

This is like calling Google Earth a game.

Per aspera has a demo that's pretty interesting.

Freelancer

The only other game that has good exploration is Freelancer. There's no other good space exploration games. People will reply by saying "b-but this game was good!" but it's all inferior.

space station 13

What's a good game for space colonization? Ideally running your own moonbase.

Freelancer honestly gave me the willies when you are looking for the postgame systems and there's all sorts of radiation and nomads and shit. You literally need the best ships in the game to go there.

So many good memories playing multiplayer.

What was the name of the space exploration game that only lasts like half an hour per cycle?

Here's hoping for Underspace to give me some of those feelings back.

Copy-paste star systems

Outer Wilds (not Worlds, which is a middling RPG)

That one is really good.

>copy paste
That's far too generous and implies human curation, they're randomly generated like No Man's Sky.

Second for the Outer Wilds.
Getting into the Ash Twin project was some bs though

i dont fuck with mouse wars but i'll try dirt rally, can i play it with the vive controllers?

How do you know the game is exploring SPACE?

No, No Man's Sky is garbage for space exploration, and generally garbage for normal planetary exploration too.

They walking on a moon of Jupiter?

>surviving mars
> star wars squadrons
They’re in space, but there’s zero exploration
>E:D
It’s fun until it isn’t. Fly thousands of light years to realize everything is the same. In a low effort way.
I’ve been playing no man sky for the first time. I know it originally sucked (why I avoided it) but damn there’s still some surprises popping up.

I didnt mention Squadrons.

I'm worried it will go too strange.

Are there any games about exploring a single world? Planetary Romance >>> Space Opera

Space SHOULD be weird. I’m exploring space to find things that are not like anything else on Earth.

Death Stranding.

That's not a space exploration game then.

Outer Wilds is a great game but I actually don't think it's a terrific space exploration game specifically, which is ironic considering it's a game almost entirely about exploring space.

It's kind of like saying that you really enjoy games where you go for long walks on an island and someone recommends Myst. I mean, yes, that's what it technically is, but it's not really what it's ABOUT. Outer Wilds is a puzzle game about deductive reasoning and observation. In terms of the things you would think of as being fundamental to space exploration (a massive sense of scale, extreme speed, otherworldliness and possibly bizarre life) it's really not that.

Space Engineers?

There's a demo out and it's honestly about as grounded as Freelancer, and Freelancer made the British a world power, so you know it's unrealistic as fuck.

>I’m exploring space to find things that are not like anything else on Earth.
You're doing what now?

Didn't the game pretty massively improve since release or is it still pretty barebones and gets boring after 90 minutes?

But other than 4x, Master of Orion type games, what genre are space exploration games?

None basically exist. I mean even Kerbal isn't really about "exploring", its about building.

It's really cool in VR for the first few hours but eventually you run into the same old repetition and boredom. Being stuck in the cockpit kills it somewhat as well, I guess they're finally getting "space legs" but not being able to explore the inside of your own ship kinda sucks.

I mean it did massively improve but the core problem of every planet being more or less the same is still there, and space is pointless.
The overall world generation to me is so incredibly boring. Every planet is the same sort of rolling hills generated by some basic perlin noise bullshit, and maybe occasionally a sinkhole or something.

Ok, 99% of everything is empty space.
Of the remaining 1%, 99% is uninhabitable, extremely dangerous, and of no value.
Of the remaining 1% of 1% (extremely charitable vs reality), just picture Mars but in varying colours, ie barely habitable and devoid of life.

No exploration is a core part of outer wilds. It’s just a fixed map just like subnautica.
Myst is more a slideshow than a walking simulator if you remove the puzzles.

no one?
Alright I'm gonna say it.
Mass Effect Andromeda is the best if you want space and planet exploration.

And that's not a good thing at all.

Outer Wilds a best
