The gameplay looks very fun but it looks like the kind of game that's dry on content and will get boring/repetitive quickly but I could be wrong.

I think the most annoying part is that your fun is a bit dependent on RNG on you getting good wands and spells. But I wouldn't say it gets dry or boring, there is a lot of replay-ability with the number of spells and effects.

Is it on the level of the bang for your buck you get from games such as Hades, BOI, or Darkest Dungeon?
If so it's a buy, just finished up Hades and got true ending so looking for a new (good) game to tide me over until boi repentence.

Yeah pretty much, although you would get more playtime from Darkest Dungeon. Going from top to bottom and finishing wont take you too long if you get lucky, you could do it in a day, but you need to play multiple times just to explore the entire map which is huge and filled with secret areas.

Plus each run will be very different depending on what spells you get. I cant put enough emphasis on how much fun the magic is in this game.

I tried out nightmare mode. Yeah it's cool to have a perk and some wands at the start, but since you have to kill shit immediately because you'll get 2-shot to death by anything, and if one of those wands doesn't have lightning or chain bolt, it's not that fun.

before 1.0 you had the default spark bolt loadout and no perk, it was very brutal.
I grinded it and it does teach you to play a lot more carefully/master enemy targeting though

what really killed it for me is that, at least before, there was a chance you would skip stage 3 outright, so you'd start on coal pits and immediately go to hiisi base. that rng made it pretty frustrating

check out the workshop and see if there's anything worth overcoming your aversion to steam if its not also on nexus or some other site. I looked through a lot of the workshop mods and most were too cheaty for my taste

When I first saw the magic system in the promo, I thought it would be a cool spell mix system, like in Magica, but it's just the usual "put a premade spell\+modifier in the slot". Pretty disappointing.

Every level beyond the Hiisi base needs to be reworked. None of them are fun or interesting.
>Jungle destroys frames. Only interesting portion is the dragon. Reuses Fungal caverns.
>Vault is completely boring. No interesting set pieces. No "lab" feel. No high security areas to break into. No production.

My issue with magicka was that there were so many possible combinations, but only a handful were viable, so you ended up just memorising 3 different attack spells so you don't get fucked on elemental resistance, and a few utility spells.
