Metroidvanias are a shit genre, get over it. I don't do contrived puzzles with one solution for a similar reason.
I play indies for gameplay, and all those games on that list (that I played at least, I played about 3/4th of them, and mean to get around to the rest) are quality games with a gameplay focus.
Katana Zero is on there. I meant to include Rabi-Ribi and Shovel Knight but I forgot. I initially wanted to try out Hyperlight Drifter, but the gameplay just looks so unappealing to me. The rest I haven't heard of or they don't appeal to me, I'll check them out though thanks.

Downwell is great. I haven't played Outlast 2 but it looks good and will get around to it. Ruiner I dropped after a couple hours, but it seemed like it had potential and just didn't click with me, not sure.

It takes a great game to overcome the inherent setbacks of the genre. Metroidvanias can be done right, but very few ever are. Generally, openness in how you can approach the world, multiple solutions, and converging paths towards the conclusion are ways a metroidvania can be not shit.

I see what you mean, but Skul really is a decent game. The presentation is shit, the enemies look generic, the dialogue is sloppy, and the music is boring as fuck. Despite all that the combat is so tight and fun to mess around with that I really don’t mind listening to some shit in the background and ignoring everything else. The designs for different characters and items can get so interesting at times that it feels like a whole different experience altogether. I really would pirate the game when it comes out if nothing else
