When you say "Cinematic" games are you referring solely to stuff like TLOU2, The Order 1886 or Detroit: Beyond Human where outside of walking from point A-B and some QTEs/Dialogue choices you have very little actual gameplay, or just simply anything that features a plot that moves the game along?

As someone who enjoys RPGs, I agree. It really shits up every other genre it shows up in.

Breath of the Wild is painfully average and outstays its welcome. It's nowhere near the masterpiece people claim it to be and it has some really antifun features that other people pass off as "interactivity".

Of course there isnt, its just a problem when youre so clearly taking a side instead of bringing some poignant discussion to the subject

I actually agree with this one, had a lot of fun playing them, also I really enjoyed the moon gravity physics in TPS. But yeah borderlands dialogue/story has always been garbage. Any other fun games where you can bounce around in low gravity?

My problem with "character progression" is that there's no impetus to get good at a game if you can just grind a couple levels or stat ups or whatever the game does to make a troublesome spot easier. RPGs that rely on grinding aren't good, and neither are games that lift RPG mechanics so they can let you grind past challenge.

I will when a gacha game both has good gameplay and doesn't bog me down with menus and currencies and a fucking real-time stamina system when I'm just trying to get through the core content. So far the only gacha with fun gameplay I've seen is Honkai Impact and it absolutely doesn't pass the second requirement. I gave Genshin a proper shot and it didn't even pass the first, the combat is worse than Honkai and empty open worlds you have to slowly run through always suck.

I agree, most games that are good with this mechanic have end games that can be scaled up a lot. They also make the skills an actual choice. Warband and starsector come to mind as games that do RPG mechanics right.

Mass Effect 3 is a better game than Mass Effect 1.
The original has a superior story but the gameplay is so terrible, with TPS mechanics that wouldn't be good even if they weren't hampered with sloppy RPG mechanic implementation. ME3 is easily the most fun third-person-shooter I've played and the story only really gets intolerably bad near the end. I look forward to ME3 on replays, and dread ME1. Those Mako sections are like Arkham Knight's batmobile: comfy the first few times, but way overplayed.

I don’t like any of the souls borne games on the count of their art direction, style, and character design. I also didn’t like armored core 5 for the same reason.
I don’t want to stare at a screen watching ugly characters walk and fight around in ugly places. A lot of it looks uninspired Tolkien-derivative.
Really it’s just the setting and armor styles to hit the nail, but it’s also a lot of things. The OST , I did enjoy especially in DS1.
