Post your face when (you) are incapable of being good with 4 characters in a game as basic as Super Smash Brothers Ultimate.

There are a lot of people who are really into being a hipster thanks to their character choice, they feel special because they use a character not many others are using, it makes them feel like they stand out. They'll deliberately pick either uncommon or low tier characters just so they can go "haha, yeah I main THIS guy, never met a main of THEM huh?"
We've see this happen with ROB mains in previous Smash games before he was buffed to hell in SSBU and became the most common tournament character.

I'm good with a ton of characters, but saying I "main" more than 2 or 3 is laughable. Host an arena and prove how good you are.

Give a rational answer as to why someone can not main more than 3 characters in a fighting game, especially one with as low character complexity as smash.

Because at that point you don't main anyone. The term "main" literally means your #1 pick. Having a main doesn't mean you can't use other characters.

Not him but I always took main as being your utmost favorite. Like by definition it could only be a single character. Then you can have as many secondary and thirdiary as you can think of but your main is just the one. Not saying this is how it has to be. Just that if that's how I always looked at it others may have too.

"This is my main, secondary, tertiary, and quarternary" becomes a bit of a mouthful, especially if the amount I play these characters varies but they all are consistantly played far more than anyone else.

I play Falco like my main because Ganon suck and I need a good pick to stay relevant in tourney, but I am undeniably better with Ganondorf. My Ganondorf is no bullshit good, but it's Ganondorf. The local champ plays ROB and everytime I end up against him I can't even touch him with Ganondorf.
