Now that the dust has settled, can we agree Dark Souls 2 was an underrated gem?

idk bout the game itself, but its cinematic trailer is one of the best cinematics I've seen in vidya history

it wasnt as good as the first one but it was still great

No. It's not underrated. It's not a gem.

It’s easily the worst of the 3 souls games but it’s still a pretty damn good game.

Nope, the game was an absolute downgrade on every conceivable way, good thing DS3 saved the series.

it was fun so it’s good in my book

DS2 is easily the most replayable souls game, it has so much variety in weapons, skills, covenants, etc.

DS2 was fun and I've played through a couple of times but I don't feel any impulse to play it again now, whereas I still do play the other "souls" games frequently

core systems and mechanics are fundamentally flawed, like the abundance of healing, soul memory, snap point movement, agility, the deluge of levels, the mess of a backstab and parry system, enemy design, boss design, level design, sound design, the animations as a whole, it's all shit in some way. There's not even a good game under the thin paint of "dark souls".

>mess of backstab and parries
What? You can't adapt to a different parry timing so you think it's a mess?

>Sound design
You're literally making things up to complain about at this point.

Yeah, the game has plenty of issues with it. But stick to criticizing those actually-flawed things. Also I'll never understand the people bitching about agility. There's nothing wrong with I-frames being tied to a stat. It gives a much deeper dynamic when it comes to soul level locked playthroughs. The fucking idiots claiming you "HAVE" to level ADP to some level are legit just shit at the game.

Also, people's memories have been deeply infected by the mess that is Scholar of the First Sin. It doesn't make sense how this version of the game came to be considered the "fixed" version - and I suspect it's because nobody actually remembers anything properly. SofFT was the version that added gankfests in many of the areas of the game - many people are surprised to find out they were not present in the original.

Besides all that, DS2 definitely performed the duty of a spiritual successor in the lore and world building of the first game MUCH better than DS3 did it. I'd honestly say 2 built a much more compelling story than the first did too. It's just a shame the game's development time was cut in half, if it had its full planned development as a next-gen only title for the time it probably would have been as good as Bloodborne.

This. it's a true cult classic.

It was ok.
If it gets completely obliterated by the passage of time (which it probably will very soon) then yeah digging it up as an underappreciated game would probably be neat in the future.

Vanilla on launch though was a complete disaster, and aside from the DLC levels there's like 3 fun areas in this entire game and they're all at the beginning.
And I have no idea why people praise the pvp specifically, because covenants are still bad in this one.

>You're literally making things up to complain about at this point.

Go and jump around on the wet floor in Drangleic Castle or slash one of the ballsack goblins with your sword.

>like the abundance of healing
Lmao you start with 10 estus flask on DS, and can get 20 if you go first to the catacombs.

If by underrated gem you meant pile of irredeemable pile of dog shit, then sure.

2 had the best pvp by a mile.

>abundance of healing
>healing with non-estus is gradual restoration and has a long animation
>estus is significantly limited compared to the first game and is a gradual, although faster, restoration
Being able to ascend any bonfire in the game to 10 estus then 15/20 later on is actually far, far worse than 99 (infinite) lifegems

dark souls 2 definitely has the best gestures in the trilogy, really wish ds3 had better ones, its the worst in gestures but at least we got patches squat

nothing tops 1's well what is it

ikr, whenever I do the 'welcome'! gesture I keep remembering and aching for well what is it instead

i've never played a souls-game before but i really want to.

a friend gifted me 3, should i start there or start with a different one?

I like it and it has my favourite build. sotfs is the way to play though, wouldn't go back to vanilla ds2

Absolutely

It's the best in the series. Not that DS1 is bad, but it does what a sequel is supposed to do: Improve on the original. No fucking berserk references necessary.

I played it on PC first and I really liked it, playing it on PS3 now with Scholar and the game is really easy compared to PC, there are less mobs almost everywhere but some summons are also absent.Got to co-op a few times too so that's nice.

It's got a ton of neat things and QoL changes and such but it's still fundamentally awful

>No fucking berserk references necessary.
user...

Yes

Terrible terrible game. Even fromsoft would like to forget it

>underrated
Not by me, I always liked it. DS3 kinda sucks but I like the Cinders mod.

really
Guess that's why the used 90% of its mechanics in DS3

I hate how it got rid of “faceless” npcs and how you have to summon them for bosses to complete their quests

Tell me about the sorceresses... why do they wear the slutty outfit?

Best overall souls game, starts ok and gets better as you go because of the DLC
DS1 is broken as fuck due to poise and awful second half.
DS3 is rollspam and chugspam all day.

10 percent that aren't are the great gestures

Attached: very sad.jpg (400x343, 33K)

What the actual shit where they thinking while making frigid outskirts?

I don't think it was a bad game.. It's just different.. It's the red headed step child of the Souls family.

It's an okay game, would rather play it than most games that release these days.
That being said, since DeS on RPCS3, DkS1, 3 and BB exist there really isn't a reason to be playing Souls 2 over them.

I acknowledge it has a ton of problems but whenever I want to replay a DS game it's always SOTFS or Bloodborne. I dunno why.

I honestly just assume anyone praising DS2 over any of the other games is trolling or mentally ill.

Start with OG Dark Souls, then play 3 if you like it enough to finish it. DS1 is the best and 3 is a direct sequel to 1.

I really like how they made the dragon shrine in SOTFS, makes the runback to the dragon much easier

I can't even tell you why, but I was the most invested in DS2

Scholar actually removed certain ganks.

Getting to Velstadt in vanilla was actual cancer. Dragon Shrine also got far more fair.
