All game franchises whose main focus are a large, varied cast inevitably attracts secondary fans who don't really care for the games themselves, just the characters. This goes double if the game itself is somehow perceived as being "difficult" or for hardcore audiences.

fighting games dont really deal with that tho. the problem is people know the fucking touhou characters before they even knew touhou was a game (example: me. I thought it was a fucking anime) so im not surprised theres alot of people who dont care for the games in that fandom

Yes they do, fighting games are mostly a dead outside of like 3 games, the percentage of people who actually play them against other are miniscule compared to people who are into the characters.

I only played the Lina nights game featuring sakuya. It's the only one I like because I find bullet hells uninspired and boring. At least they look pretty to watch a pro play

To be fair, shmups and bullet hells are probably one of the hardest genre of games by far; only other arcade games come close (which I guess includes fighting games). It's not just perception, these games ARE hardcore.

I personally have the opposite problem. I've started really getting into playing the games with TH7, 8 and 15. I want to get into the characters and all the lore and shit because the little I understood from TH15's story looked really cool, but I have no fucking idea where to start with all of it.

I don't think Zun minds that his community constantly talks about how much they want to fuck his characters. Contrary, likely. That was the point of the disclaimer in my statement.
