This is the canon prequel (or possibly sequel depending on how it's told) to BotW.
Due to the nature of the story, they made it a hack n' slash game instead of the standard model.
And so they named it accordingly.

It's a separate spin-off, but a canon one. The proper continuation of the last mainline game is still being developed ("the sequel of Breath of the Wild") but this is the backstory for the game, the war that happened 100 years ago (the prequel to Breath of the Wild)

The cutscene that shows Ganon appearing doesn't actually show that he infected the divine beasts and guardians. What most likely happened is that Ganon woke, the champions put up a good fight, and only during the last minute did Ganon started overtaking the divine beasts.

I care about fps in fast-paced action games, yeah.
