Why is the PS2 so praised today when back in the days it was basically a laughing stock? People didn't actually think the console itself was good or had good graphics or anything like that, people just had it because third party developers made all the games for it. People knew that even Gamecube was more powerful and that Dreamcast could have compete with the PS2. I hear people today saying things like "the PS2 was a beast", no it wasn't it was jaggy, pixelated, underpowered and overrated dvd player.

Oh and the shovelware, you would be hard-pressed to find shovelware on the Dreamcast, but on PS2 it's like 75% of the catalog
This is the american perspective.
While you were the epicenter of early gaming, other countries didn't even have a selection.
My first console was some random thing, don't even remember the brand, it had all those famous early 2D games, don't remember having an alternative in the store either.
Then the PS2 came and it was pretty much THE standard console for Europe.
Gamecube? Better hardware?
Buddy, if this site didn't exist, I wouldn't be aware there WAS a competition for the PS2.
For lots of people, Sony was simply the main brand, and I played lots of great games on the PS2/PS3, the competition seems to be americentric, or possibly in the richest European countries as well, but I wouldn't know if Britain/France/Germany cared about other stuff.
Nowadays PC blows everything out so it doesn't matter anymore.
The PS2 had DMC3.
Mogged by Ninja Gaiden.
Yeah and everyone knows it would have been better on GC or Xbox, the games were good in spite of PS2
I have European friends and some of them had Xbox or Gamecube, though it's not as diverse as in America
>Dreamcast could've competed
LOL not with that controller. Gamecube's C stick was weird but at least it had a 2nd stick. And at least one shoulder button.
i don't even care, i got it because it got more games. That's why i don't like GC, it got less games than Xbox.
Europe and Japan to a lesser extent were pretty much Sony territory during sixth gen
They could have released a new controller like Sony did with PS1
>Mogged by Ninja Gaiden
Nah, the top dogs of hack and slash stand proud together. I wish god hand was in the picture though, deserves some credit.
Because it has some good games?
What's the point of making shit up like this? PS2 was THE console, everyone remotely interested in vidya had one. I only ever knew 1 guy with an Xbox, and none with Nintendo or Sega's trash
That would create a divide in your consumer base and all games would have to be made with the standard controller in mind. On the PS1 Ape Escape was one of the few games to require a dualshock.
...that would have been better on Xbox or GC, Wii had some good games too but people still think the hardware is crap
The PS2 had some great games on it by virtue of being a japanese console and benefitted from all the other multiplatform titles as well. When it came to the sheer variety of good games you could play on the damn thing it was essentially unmatched during its time with the gamecube only really having its nintendo exclusives to fall back on. Its a crushing disappointment to see how far the playstation has fallen ever since then but the PS2 era was some of the best days of gaming in recent memory.
games > hardware
God Hand
MGS2/3
JRPGs
Silent Hill 2/3/4
etc...
Plenty of SCE exclusives, which has yet to be ported properly to modern platforms or other platforms at the time.
>why is the ps2 so praised? it had all the games
retard
>Be kid
>Get ps2
>Can play entire existing ps1 library and a huge ps2 library
>Piracy easy and cheap
>Friend has gamecube
>Constantly asks me to borrow him my ps2 so he could play games
>Bought a ps2 eventually
>Everybody else had ps2's
Everyone had it because they had to have it, but even back then "this looks like a PS2 game" was an insult
>still making shit up
Saying a game looked like a PS2 game would be much the same as saying it looked like a game, other systems were nearly completely irrelevant
It's loved because it had an amazing selection of games. Sure the Xbox and GameCube were more powerful, but they lacked both a great selection of third-party developers and exclusives. Compare the exclusives on those consoles with PS2 exclusives like DMC3, God Hand, KH2FM, MGS2-3, Ratchet and Clank 1-3, and SH2-3. The only games I can see reaching that level of quality from both consoles are F-Zero GX, Ninja Gaiden Black, and TTYD.
I can't cope with the fact I had my own ps2 9 years after release
Since when have superior console specs ever influenced popular opinion? Literally every single console gen winner had at least one competitor that was technologically superior, graphics don't mean shit.
PS2 is praised today for the reason it was praised then, the library. Of course any third party game was dogshit compared to Xbox/GC. Xbox was the best console that gen, decent online, built in HDD, only console that could run PC heavy hitters like HL2, Doom 3, and Morrowind, even if barely sometimes.
Damn, and I thought I was late to the party for getting mine in 2006.
>but muh DVD player
Doesn't matter, it sold regardless. It had games.
It also had backwards compability with the greatest console Somy ever made.
>but muh shovelware
Evident in every console. Irrevelant.
>but muh weak hardware
Games.
Born ‘93 here, I eventually acquired all three consoles that gen, but got a PS2 last. I got GC first, for Melee, then an Xbox for Halo 2. It took MGS3 for me to finally get a PS2. PS2 had some amazing exclusives, but trying to play anything that wasn’t exclusively a PS2 game wasn’t worth the time. Imagine playing Chaos Theory on a GC/PS2 and thinking you got the real experience.
>It also had backwards compability with the greatest console Somy ever made.
So it was backwards-compatible with itself?
And i'm way too late to the party, i got it just recently because ps2 emulation fucking sucks
There are two types of PS2 games. The MGS3/SH3 “how the fuck do these models still look so good” and then there’s stuff like GTA being 80% jaggies on PS2.
And if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle.
Wise choice, enjoy games

Citation fucking needed
