Non-spoiler version: it's similar to the VN but a bit different
Spoiler version, don't read this shit if you haven't finished the VN yet: the second episode establishes that for some reason Rika has to loop again, despite already knowing who her killer is (which kinda does only happen in Matsuribayashi, so there's no way this isn't a sequel) and presumably defying her fate. The story so far seems to be basically the VN but with some spins, like rules X, Y and Z probably not applying anymore.

Currently there hasn't really been much gore outside of a single scene in 4 episodes (which cover the 1/8 VN chapters). Can't really give you a comparison to the old anime, I really don't remember shit about it.
As for the pacing, it's alright. Remember it's not really a VN adaptation so they can just cut stuff short without too many issues. Also apparently it's getting 24 episodes so strap the fuck in.
