There's no real reason to own Mega Collection these days. Arguably the same is true of Gems but Sonic the Fighters might be harder to get running through emulation (dunno never tried) and you might not have a PS360 to just buy it on there so it might be your best bet for that game. Same deal with R saturn emulation is a bitch last I tried. Also from my personal experience it just flat out plays better on GC than Saturn. Granted I think it's based on a PC port that I never played so maybe that with mods is the definitive way these days.
point is mega collection is literally just genesis and game gear roms while gems collection is at least a bit more out-there to justify picking up nowadays. but back as a kid probably mega collection; I fucking love me some CD and Fighters but I can't deny that having 1,2, and 3K are worth more in the long run. Also Ristar that game was pretty sick.

It was a minor thing, but I still haven't forgotten my anger. There was no way I was going to convince my family to take me back to EB games just to get the correct game, so I just stayed with it. Mean Bean machine was a great game.

Gems Collection has the shitty PC port of CD. The Sonic R version based on the PC port was pretty based though. It had 4 player support and better draw distance.

In 2020, Gems wins.
Solid versions of R and Fighters, and a decent CD version, make it way better then a the shitty emu of mega collection.
There are soooo many better ways to play sonic 1&2 now (and 3K if you count unofficial releases of course).
At release, I owned everything in MC already, but it is the collection of better games, even if it isn't a "better" collection.

This. I would buy Gems collection solely for Sonic R, even the Game Gear games would be fun to try out for a couple of hours. Have no reason to own the Mega collection since all the games are much more widely available.

user, no. That game doesn't exist. It's supposed to be memory holed like Sonic 4. The Riders games were unfortunately stopped on two games before a true trilogy could be made, never forget that.
