Union fees and if you're part of the union, you have to go on strike if the management does something that really pisses them off.
Unions are one of those things that your mileage really varies.
Sometimes they're really good and help guarantee hours, consistent management procedures to make your day go smoother, make you much harder to fire arbitrarily, and better wages + benefits.
On the other, if they go on strike, you're basically out of the job until it's concluded. Additionally you have to follow their rules which depends. And there are plenty of corrupt unions that do actively work with the management or they're geniunely non-effectual. It's one of those things that I think really depends on the type of work and where you live, plus the actual competency of the union leadership.

Honestly if being non-union is really shit but you don't want to leave the job, it can be worth it to be under their protection. I would honestly ignore the politicking about if unions are communist or some shit, you should really looking out for yourself above all else and if joining a union benefits you while you're working that job, it's a completely viable choice.

The problem with Unions is you have to work with lazy old men who know they can't be fired because of seniority. Plus if someone gets laid off it will be you, even if you work harder than the older people.

They're supposed to work as a kind of power broker or leverage. Workers unionize, union demands shit (safety, wages, treatment etc) under threat of strikes. Union workers pay snall amount into union to fund said strikes as union pays out wage replacement.
Doesn't work when the unions are corrupt or if nobody goes along with it.
Also takes up litigation in workplace shit like unjustified firings, withheld wages, etc. Also funded by said membership fee.
