Any story involving copying/uploading your consciousness should be killed and its manuscripts burned for their lack of philosophical rigor.

I know

...Catherine?
...CATHERINE?!

I really thought once it was established that Simon was a robot that the exsistential problem would be solved, transferring from a human to a machine is tricky and involves a copy. However once a copy is already made, it shoudln't be too hard. I thought they could just plug in their cortex chips into the arc, as if it was PCIe. CATHRINE, WHY DOESNT YOUR ARC HAVE EXPANSION SLOTS FOR CORTEX CHIPS? Maybe WAU Creature Simon didn't have one, but Diving Suit Simon sure as fuck did. Fuck you Cathrine.

She cute

But a coin slot.

she did what she had to
and don't forget she had the same fate every time you unplugged her

Then what am I doing here?
Why am I still carrying the memory of Simon and Catherine?

Yes, Simon essentially killed her everytime he transferred her over to a different device.
Which is pretty fucked up with how comfortable she was with it.

>durrrh Simon dumb hurrrr
He was literally denying reality, he's not dumb it's a coping mechanism.

I'ts too bad all the other robots were destroyed otherwise Simon would have some company at Pathos 2

There never was, the fact people still argue about it shows how they don't comprehend what happened.

yeah I cant say that I blame him, he reacted quite realistically to finding out what he really was.

At least it's not as bad as time travel, that meme is fucking played to death now

I don't get how there are still arguments about it when it was pretty obvious what was going on after Simon 2 was left behind in the old diving suit.

Catherine lied to him to convince him to go along with her plan, otherwise he would have not wanted to be her errand boy.

People are dumb, same shit as monty hall problem

Catherine got the sweet release of death but Simon has to probably live for hundreds of years by himself knowing that no humans exist on the planet anymore.

This is incorrect. Her conscience was in the chip, so everytime he unplugged her she would shut down and resume at the next stop.

Think like if you fucked a horse and whenever you took your dick out of it you would faint until the next horse got his hole dicked by you. That's Catherine.

came here just to say

FUCK AKERS

that is all

not it was more like dying and being resurrected

That's not the same as being killed then having a clone made of your memories though.

Functionally it literally is. In fact you could be dying and coming back to life every time you sleep and you would have no way of knowing, it makes no difference.

Reminder that that scientist guy was right about continuity. If you kill yourself shortly after you copy your consciousness then two of them merge.
That's why you play as robot Simon, because human one died. And also why you continue playing as Simon in powersuit, because he kills his previous copy.
So technically Simon who was left behind on Earth should kill himself and he will merge with Arc Simon.

I still can't decide whether would've liked it more if they showed the Simon that stayed behind before or after the Ark Simon. The way they did it transitions nicely into the shot of the Ark in space but the other way around would've fooled more people only for them to then go "oh shit yeah right another Simon stayed behind".

Most retarded post I've ever seen in a SOMA thread, and I've seen some serious retards.

Well he doesn't HAVE to.
He could just walk off the edge of the abyss and let the water pressure kill him.

They are not US!

if i upload your mom's sex tape to the internet then delete my copy, does that mean the internet becomes her sex tape

I doubt he would choose to live, he probably killed himself shortly after he realized what happened.

Semantics.

Exactly my point, they are different.

>Everytime we sleep we die and an exact copy of our conscience gets in the same body.

Lets think. How about if Jod made a copy of you. Same conscience and body as you but 1m to your right. Is that "you" or another person?

How about if "you" were switched by your exact clone in your sleep. Are you "you" or is the new clone you? Does that make a difference?

Dumb as bricks protagonist really killed the ending for me, a big reveal to your character that you the player already knew 5 fucking hours ago.
I don't give a damn about this idiot's mental disability, engage ME the player THROUGH the character.

You're defending the awful storytelling/writing in this game from a position that it had to be awful... for the story? That totally misses the mark, to be satisfying for the player/reader - the one and only thing it actually needs to be.

>Everytime we sleep we die and an exact copy of our conscience gets in the same body.
That's not what I said at all, and then your further post appears to have little to nothing to do with what we were actually talking about.

They don't "merge" you fucking idiot, if you kill yourself right after you scan or a week later it doesn't matter, the point of killing yourself is to be free from the suffering that is your current life, but know that you're still "alive" somewhere out there. The guy just went insane and people believed his insanity.

Good question. I think the way it ended was best for dramatic effect, knowing right from the start Simon-2 was in the ocean.

For instance, how you felt when Simon-1 was abandoned in the first place? You probably thought "Oh well, gotta kill him and continue the journey." But when YOU, as Simon-2, were abandoned, THEN you may have sympathy for S-1 knowing that it was over for you.

If they switched the ending, I think it wouldn't have the same impact.

Is Simon's coping the biggest pleb filter in this board?

He's too microbrain to realize that you aren't "playing as different characters" or whatever dumb bullshit he was trying to say, the reason you play in different bodies is because every Simon has the same memories up until the transfer point.

>>a big reveal to your character that you the player already knew 5 fucking hours ago
>He knew it what was going to happen and decided finishing the game anyway.
>gets upsetty with the ending YOU KNEW it was coming.

What happened, again? Some kinda global ice age with humanity locked up in cryo to be shipped off to space? I don't remember it very well. Definitely a better game than Amnesia, though. Really don't like blurry screens as a mechanic.

letting the player on the ark at all was a mistake
