When and why did video games start becoming so massive in file size?

that's only COD, a handful of games are 100-120gb, most games are still 40 to 80gb.

Large file sizes are said to be the result of poor optimization and lack of compression of easily compressible media. That may or may not be true, it sounds like a circling rumor. Either way, to explain the motivation behind that, it seems like an excuse to gain ownership of your hard drive. If you have CoD taking up a large chunk of your hard drive, you don't have space to install other games which would distract you from it. Games already try to win your lasting attention, so you play them and not the other endless multiplayer experiences, so why not put a virtually physical limitation to achieve that?

>If you have CoD taking up a large chunk of your hard drive, you don't have space to install other games which would distract you from it.

i guess maybe, but at the same time i never bother trying out these games because i'd have to spend like 5 hours downloading them and reserving space on my limited SSD for them. i'm sure some dumbass boomer at activision thinks it's totally working but i doubt they have any hard data on it, seeing as how hilariously limited and skewed their sample sets must be. i'm sure it's at least 80% because of some weird in-company practice that they won't bother fixing because money

When game publishers realized they could literally fight for user's digital space with the intent of making it so they only play their game which just happens to be a game with microtransactions hmm

It all started with Max Payne 3, then GTA5 upped the game further.

So it’s all rockstars fault.

>it’s all cockstar’s fault
Fuck rockstar, honestly

>JUST PUT YOUR GAMES ON SSD
>JUST DEDICATE A HUGE CHUNK OF YOUR SSD TO ONE GAME
it's geniuos, they're preventing you from ever wanting to uninstall it to install anything else (which will likewise be bloated to all hell filesize)

too inept to compress files
forces you to download every language and has them all sitting raw

That's how

>westacuck games

>Western AAA games
I never have to put up with this shit with nip games or western indie games, if those are big filesize it's because they're actually using it

>Ctrl+f piracy
>0 results
its not obvious?

Yeah buddy bloating my drive is definitely making me buy this shit lmao

Do Americans really have less than 2tb of storage in their rigs?

>or 50gb for just multiplayer
so 50gb after you finish the campaign and delete it
even MW now lets you select what parts of the game you want downloaded, just removing the campaign cuts 35gb and spec ops removes another 38gb, both of which are pointless to keep downloaded

>torrenting speeds compared to steam speeds

cod is on battlenet

>giving sixty shekels to activision versus not giving sixty shekels to activision and just waiting few more hours to download
Not like people pirate cowadoodies anyway
It's a multiplayer game made successful by low iq mutts

reminder that ps3 version GTA V is only 20gigs

What makes people post this? It's such a low IQ take that falls apart under basic scrutiny.

>PC gamers
>noooo, consoles are holding us back, gib his res textures and uncompressed sound
>ok, here bro
>noooooo, its to big

>250GB on launch
>or 50GB for multiplayer
does that include zombies?

Stop bending over cuck nigger.

Xbox 360 must be under 8gb since it's on a single dvd.

The new devs can't compress or they are lazy.

What are they going to do about the PS5 that has like 600geebees total? You'll be able to fit at most two games like this on it, if lucky.
No one has ever asked for uncompressed sound, it's a retarded thing they did for consoles so they could stream it directly from the drive to the sound buffer.

Half Life Alyx is one of the best looking games I've played in years, it is "only" like 60 GB and that includes the filesize of a whole fucking SDK included with the game. What does call of duty need all that space for?

>Up to 250 gigs if you want RTX ultra settings
At least post the article and not just cherry pick shit headlines
Game is 150/160 gigs for ALL game modes including MP, SP, and Zombies
50 gigs for just MP an Zombies

660 i think but yeah pretty much
>geebees

Didn't Titanfall 1 get lots of shit because it had ~20 gb of audio and languages? Now GTAV is like 100 gb, and Warzone is also triple digits, why are these nigger devs getting away with it?

>I never have to put up with this shit with nip games or western indie games
come on now
>Nioh - 75GB
>Tekken 7 - 75GB
>Nier Automata - 50GB
>Kingdom Come - 50GB
>Yakuza Kiwami 2 - 45GB
>Valkyria Chronicles 4 - 35GB
>Vanquish - 20GB
>MGR - 25GB
Especially with Vanquish and MGR which I remember the movie folders taking up 3/4 of the game size.
Visual novels also used to be fucking bloated even back in the mid-00s and late 00s but they pale in comparison to the average game these days.

the next-gen consoles only have like 600-700 gigs free on their SSDs, it's about dominating those.

>Kingdom Come - 50GB
That game is fucking massive so it's fine.

>UE4 fighter takes up 75 gigs
No excuses lmao. Eat my shit Bamco.

The only ones you have a point with are Tekken 7, Vanquish, Nier: Automata, and MGR. The rest of those games have enough content in them to justify their filesize.

360 had two discs friend

T7 has 22GBs of pre-rendered videos you can safely delete. Japanese developers love that shit, FFXIII on Steam was something like 9GBs of game and 60GBs of pre-rendered video.

They use uncompressed sound in most console ports, that's why they are so big.

dolphin porn

Always have been.
