In the 1800's entire columns of Frenchmen marched to certain death shouting Vive L'Empereur! Vive L'Empereur! Vive L'Empereur! as they crashed against Russians, Austrians, Prussians, Anglos, and any else who dared stand as an enemy of the revolution. They died by the thousands believing in the justness of their cause; they died believing in him. The revolution was of course a crock of shit, and the miserable alliance of mutants, proto-ancoms, bourgeois liberals, and self-styled autocrats manipulating the agitated and gullible masses made a predictable mess of things, butchering hundreds of thousands in the name of some glorious cause. The directorate wasn't much better, but at least it was "stable" and stuffed some of the most outrageous "reforms".
Napoleon isn't "based" because of some atheistic bullshit. He's based because he was an extremely talented and intelligent man who evaluated the political landscape, manipulated those who saw him as a simple stooge into raising him to power, and then used his personal charisma and deeds to rally a proud but much beleaguered nation into nearly dominating Europe once again. The man was a legend the likes of which we rarely see on this earth. About the only thing I can really fault him is the shittier parts of the Napoleonic Code placing the burden of innocence on the accused.
Napoleon deserves his own genre of video games.
