yes, but I recommend trying a run without doing so too. it's a pretty different experience.
It's fine, but its worth revisting to ironman. For that kind of run, you would just want to look up how to build your base and tech build order suggestions. It's not to bad once you get plasma weapons.
Sure. That's how I played it the first time. Did Ironman later. You really have to make peace with the fact you're gonna get screwed sometimes but I found it more fulfilling in the long run.
How does anyone stay motivated after losing men? The setback is massive.
this
you guys are pathetic
>200+ hours
>not a single ironman victory to my name
You just gotta change your mindset from 'im going to play this game in the most perfect optimal way, my characters are heros' to 'this is a dire situation but we have to make the best of the hand we're dealt'
both playstyles make for some really fun stories, just give it a go and try to push through when something goes wrong, its pretty rewarding.
it much more interesting to have actual stakes
Waaaah, two strangers, started off a game with a notorious difficulty curve on a mode where they can more aptly learn how to play the game before diving into the mode with actual consequences.
pfff, weak
first playthrough save scum
second one do iron man
Playing honourman makes you form a way more interesting narrative in your head about how the campaign is going. The bitter frustration of losing an important soldier becomes part of the fun.
In vanilla EU the game is pretty much over by the time you get plasma equipment, you're just victory lapping at that point.
if any of you niggas are into old x-com, you should try stirring abyss
Cheating is cheating, user. If you can extract enjoyment from a game you cheated to win at, that can only ever benefit you.
I tend to find that once I start cheating I get bored, though, since there is no tension left.
>new patch ruins bronzeman mod in WotC.
I'm very sad.
How is the enemy/item/build variety
did you have fun?
yes? then you had fun
no? then you didn't
who cares how you have fun?
But what if they have fun wrong?
Save scumming is basically mandatory for the first month on Impossible because its just so RNG even if you play absolutely perfectly.
you can't have fun wrong
you're either having fun or you aren't
theres less variety in equipment than in X-COM but what is there is more viable, also you can use dark magic to mutate your troops and give em permanent buffs, you also need to keep an eye on oxygen levels and the sanity of your guys
Once you know the game better, it doesn't happen very often until mid game. And once you have plasma and titan armor, deaths shouldn't really happen at all.
You fucking get on with it. If you lose motivation over losing men then you'd be a pretty shit Commander irl. Balance squads with a high ranking soldier leading much lower ranked soldiers into battles to help get them experience.
Only go full A team on terror missions or plot missions.
The long war mod has a mode called bribe man (opposed to iron man) which does not let you save during missions, but it allows you to restart a mission. This way, you’re still punished because missions can take like an hour out longer, but you’re not totally fucked if things go very wrong. And I think that’s the best mode for Xcom unless you’re very experienced with the game AND you don’t mind overwatch crawling your way through every mission.
Call me a casual, but for me most Iron man type modes are just frustrating and make me ragequit the game once I lose something big late in the game.

This triggers the save scummer
Bronze man, not bribe man
Less equipment variety than xcom is pretty damning given that xcom already is pretty limited in that regard.
EU2012 the snowball is a serious issue because of how long it takes to level up soldiers and how powerful the promotion abilities are.
The game even fucking penalizes you for trying to promote more than a team of 6, in eu2012 you get an XP PENALTY for every soldier you already have at the colonel level, I have no fucking clue what they were smoking when they decided that was a good idea.
X2 and it's expansion helped mitigate that problem somewhat by shifting more of the power to gear items rather than soldier abilities but the problem is still there.
