In games where you're supposed to go fast, you put the character right in the middle of the screen? Even Super Mario Bros, made fully 6 years earlier when video games were in their infancy, had the intelligence to give the player more screen in front of the character than behind it.

In Sonic, continuous speed is a reward for mastering the level, not something you should be able to have from the start. You, like so many others, have fallen into the "well it's Sonic so I must be able to go fast all the time and the game is bad if I can't do so, it's le gotta go fast game after all, right?" trap.

I never said it was. The idea behind Yuji Naka making Sonic was how improving knowledge of 1-1 after repeated attempts meant you could complete it faster. Sonic is a game built entirely around that -- the speed cap is higher, and the levels are designed not just to provide platforming challenges, but to offer significant opportunities to gain great speed if you've memorised the level

Lol this, Sonic just has a higher speed cap than Mario, but the gameplay principles of speedrunning is the exact same, go as fast as possible. For Sonic to look better he gains even more speed. It's like TF2 Surfing, that's how Sonic works.
