Not at all. Armored Core is more complex and ball busting than Ace Combat is. Ace Combat is a pretty easy game that you replay mostly to get higher scores. In some Armored Core games you're just trying to survive the mission. It takes a lot of pre mission preparation and I'd say that half of the time you're just building your mech and in a way it's one of the reasons why people like it so much. I started up with VDay and that was a mistake as I fucking hated the weapon type system.

If you're just starting out I'd recommend starting with Armored Core 3 because it's the easiest and then just go from there. I also feel that AC3 strikes a good balance between the FAST from 4 and onwards and the slow tankier mechs of the first 2 games.

The OST is also sick but unfortunately not as good as Ace Combat's in my opinion:

I wish 5 was better. Really liked its aesthetic.

Armored Core can get pretty challenging specially when you don't know what to do or what to build but there's guides for that and you can also cheese the game with certain builds that pretty much do about everything and are very balanced. I didn't like it at first but the satisfaction of surviving a sortie and coming back with mad cash is superb. It is not relaxing, you're always moving around dodging and trying to be aware of your surroundings taking out priority targets while you manage your temperature and energy. It's a very immersive game and although the story is not as fun as the ones from AC 4,5 and 0 are, it serves its purpose and the lore is interesting. The only way I could think of improving the game is streamlining menus, reducing loading times and adding a full cockpit camera.

Go play Armored Core 3 PSP, it's pretty easy to emulate on PPSSPP and get into, just make sure to play with the controls and change them a bit to suit your playstyle. You'll enjoy it a lot
