I started playing DQ in 2015. I played through the SFC versions of I-III, and as I was playing through the PSX version of IV, I remembered hearing that the English versions had an accent for each area in the game. I'd already seen the screenshots of chapter I, so when I was playing through chapter II, I looked up an English video of it to see what accent they used, and at first I thought I found a video of a really bad fan translation. I've looked into DQ localizations a lot since then and I can't believe what they do in them. I even tried playing the English 3DS version of DQ VII a few years after the Japanese version to see how the localization was, but I gave up somewhere during the "Spanish town".
They're easy to understand, but they're still overdone. I'm not like some DQ fans who get triggered by accents in general; like, I think they're fine in FF games for the most part and others, but they're just so poorly done in DQ it's incredible, and that's not even taking the rewriting they do into account.
