Find the nearest system that isn't yours in a widest search. Don't even bother with abnormalities at the start, you need to find the nearest warm body around first.
Start sucking.
Pass the essence law ASAP, go wide. Your arks are built in a single turn and arks > filling all your population slots.
Suck it harder you slut.
Keep in mind food sucks and you completely ignore planet size as long as you have the colonization tech. That means small systems and gas giants can house more pops for you than anyone else early on, but high sterility systems' happiness can be a massive pain in the dick, so you might need to use a law or hero for that.
Sucky sucky long time.
Arks actually have pretty decent amounts of module and can hold their own early on if you have the essence income for them. In particular, you can create an ark stuffed to the brim with siege modules in a single turn from parking your attack ark to quickly start purging.
Never stop sucking.
The AI gets mad but if you can get militarists in power that just helps you keep your heroes in fleet since you should be constantly in conflict. Religious first party is great too because you can siege shit while in cold war.

I really enjoy how different the factions are.
also riftborn is the most fun to both bully and befriend because of how the leader reacts

It's really odd how the Viceroy is so adorable in diplomatic channels but an extremist sociopathic dictator in their quest line. They also look fantastic. I'm really sad fleet speed modules got removed from general ship design though, they're so slow.
