No game with unit balance THAT bad could ever be considered a masterpiece. Tell someone you use Arden or Hannibal unironically and see how long it takes them to laugh at you
That said, it's one of the most beloved FE games thanks to it's story and characters. Plus I applaud the audacity to make maps so fucking big

even as a fire emblem fan I can barely tolerate the gameplay. the story isn't great either, that one thing is cool but the overall level of writing is poor throughout the entire game

Genuine masterpiece of the medium in concept and execution. A little dated gameplaywise, but it's serviceable in that regard.

It is by far the highest concept FE game. Every single one that tried to ape its premise fucked it up where it mattered, completely, and would have been better doing away with its second gen.

It makes me truly sad to know that a game such as this will never be made again, and that its very own creators would have bloated it up with waifushit retroactively if only they could. Ironically it's also the only game where a self-insert avatar could fit into the remake gameplay seamlessly, so long as they keep their fucking mouth shut.

Don't care about the gameplay being easy, i want to be able to blow through the combat. Is the story & characters as good as people say?

yes it is

If you want to diminish the story, you could pretty much consider it Game of Thrones for Famicom. There's murder, betrayal, regicide, incest, and a pretty stupid main character who does exactly what the "villain" wants him to.
But then you get into the characters and what they want, and what they're willing to do for it. The "villain" is up there in the best characters in Fire Emblem history once you realize his story
If you want to blow through combat, lean on Sigurd, by the way. But if you want to take the time, learn how the game works, ESPECIALLY the romance function. It will make the second half of the game much easier

Interesting for its time but it's horribly outdated and flawed and only has value now as nostalgiafagging

Sooo just Legend of Galactic Heroes except not in Space?

>Outdated
That's probably the greatest tragedy of this game. It is the only game that HASN'T seen either a dedicated release in the West or a remake like with 1,2 or 3

It's considered the peak of FE for story quality, but that's such an incredibly low bar it's still just a very mediocre one. Never ever play an FE game with story high on your list of what should matter. It's nothing but glue to move forward through the battles, including this one.

So it isn't as good as something like Tactics Ogre Let us Cling Together, Suikoden II or Final Fantasy Tactics in terms of story?

I haven't read LOTGH so I can't really say.

I'd say it's more that there is just SO MUCH in between story beats. Maps are literally country sized, and will take a long time to finish, so the majority of the game is spent in combat
But when the story is there it's great

So excellent story but awful pacing?

slap the leg ring on arden and watch him go
i'll give you hannibal though, he's a bitch to recruit and sucks ass anyways

The maps being fucking titanic really kills the pacing, yes
Which is a shame. I wonder how many people got halfway through the prologue before they gave up because of how fucking big it is

No. It's a decent game and the story's not "bad", but people who will usually bother to respond when you bring this game up will often suck it off excessively. It's fine, but the general rule of gameplay coming way before story still applies. If you care mostly about stories, FE is probably not the right series for you.

>that one thing
But that one thing is the point of the entire game. Genealogy lets you build up your characters for 20 hours, and the mercilessly and brutally kills most of them in front of your eyes. Some of that effort does not go to waste mechanically, but you know that a massive wrong has been commited at the end of the second gen, a disservice to these character's life stories, and that you must make it right. And, in the process, like Seliph, not be consumed by frustration of having to start over, and instead try to figure out why it happened and what the point of all this has really been, that Sigurd at the time couldn't have seen from his point of view. It gives the game an incredible emotional charge. Kind of like FFVI. The format being imperfect lets the mind fill in details of what happened during the timeskip.

It's laughable how the further on Fire Emblem goes, the less balls the games have to do anything of the sort. Remember any moment Fates tried to do 'tragedy' and try to keep a straight face. Kudos to 3H in this regard for letting really bad things happen and go through.

>Leg Ring
Arden's ass is quite literally glued to the castle. Leg Ring goes to Ayra so she can delete shit as fast as her husband

have you played dragon quest 5? It's kind of like that in the sense that it's poorly written and not fun to play but if you look back on it several years from now you'll forget about most of the boredom and recall one memorable scene

I absolutely love Final Fantasy VI, will i love this?

It and Thracia are the best games in the series. I beat Thracia last night, and holy shit I'm just imagining the entirety of 4 going to the level of detail in Thracia and I think that would be my dream game. Seeing the battles up close and personal is great, and one thing you don't really get out of other fire emblem games is the sense of time passing. Leif spent 6 months holed up in Leonster castle, defending it while Seliph moved south from Isaach. Knowing the geography from 4 and seeing Leif move all over Thracia is so fucking cool to me. They're definitely my 2 favorite in the series.

Dragon Quest V on the PS2 was great though, i really thought the story was good.

10/10 story
10/10 ost
6/10 gameplay

Hopefully the inevitable remake will make maps less tedious

No because you clearly have shit taste.
VI is the worst FF game, even worse than II.

>Thracia tried to retcon Travant into a tragic Arvis-esque figure
>He still comes off as a titanic douchebag who murdered Ethlyn and Quan to be a shithead
Yes, Thracia sucks and Quan is a fucking retard, but that doesn't make Travant any less of a cunt. Hopefully Arion, Altena and Leif will be able to unite the Peninsula

The first half is pretty damn good but then the big twist comes and, while good, it makes the second half which is mediocre at best.

Depends, FFVI gameplay also gets less fun the older you are.

I absolutely disagree about 'only one scene'. In fact it's not a scene I think of often when I think of the game. It's the framing scene of the second gen, but the real amazing ability of FE4 that I have never seen replicated in any game before is emergent narrative. The story changes somewhat depending on your choices, and what you get in the end winds up being pretty ironic no matter which pairings (if any) you chose. Hint: pay attention to relationships of kids in the second gen to their fathers.

In terms of connecting gameplay to plot FE5 is by far the best game in the series. Still prefer FE6 myself though, the refined original gameplay and difficulty is just best to me.

>DQV
Best description of the game I've seen. Fuck I can't believe I let Zig Forums meme me into playing that horseshit. Literally only worth for the Toriyama monsters and le nanking denier man's score.

Filtered, as all kino does.

Fucking kill yourself you autistic piece of shit, stop flooding this board

I'm 22 and didn't play it until 2017, now i yearly replay it along with Ocarina of Time

A little bit of both.

Then you'll probably like FE4. FE4's story is weaker as there's only really one memorable story beat but I think the gameplay is more enjoyable, despite the major issues. I'm not trying to insult either game, I'm just trying to give you an idea what to expect.
