I'm actually struggling quite a bit. Don't remember it being this difficult. I was stuck in sand land for a long time and could barely beat the fucking boss.

Yeah, make sure you don't talk to professor booster in the labyrinth (Unless your playing cave story Plus then you can talk to him but refuse the jet pack) and pick up that tow rope in core boss room before talking to curly.

Monster X and the Core are the real difficulty spikes. And at the end too, if you don't have the Spur.
I've beaten the game several times, but I showed it to my brother the last time I played and took the MachineGun to show him that, given how unique it was and then got absolutely hard stuck on the final bosses, particularly the resurrected core- even though that's how I beat the game the very first time. For some reason that downranking just screwed me over completely again and again.
Then I accidentally loaded my Running Hell save, figured I'd show him that, and beat Ballos in one attempt. The Spur is just too good man.

It is a game you either love or hate all throughout. I personally loved it from the second I heard the main menu theme play, to the annoying dog retrieval quest, and the fucking hard final boss(es).
