I doubt that was an option. It's very likely MS is taking a hardware hit and planning to make up for it with Gamepass et al. I don't think Sony could afford the same hit on hardware. Though they clearly are testing the waters with the digital only version.
Personally I think they should have just waited to launch until next year and tried to have a handful of games to release with it other than two ps4 games. Economy would have been better off by then too, so competing for dollars would be easier. But they are banking heavily on branding moving this thing, and they aren't wrong. But I dunno. Maybe first year doesn't really mean shit in the long term anyways.
