It's not too surprising since Microsoft shot themselves in the foot this gen, essentially giving Sony no competition, so without that incentive, they get greedy and more embolden to do shitty things to make more profit since they know they have most core gamers in their palms and know that they will likely buy from them anyways.

And I point to the sales numbers. Selling 1 million isn't a big deal anymore like it was 20 years ago. Now a "poor" selling AAA games sells like 5 million. The higher your volume the thinner your margins can be. This is revenue chasing. Nothing more.
Well, at the end of the day Nintendo did get away with increasing their handheld games prices to 60 bucks by selling them as "console grade titles" on a "hybrid console"
I really hope they won't increase prices any further. 70 bucks/euros is a lot in those countries, but in Mexico official games can get as high as 90 bucks on release and Nintendo rarely gets price drops here

How come there's no way to streamline development costs these days? Why is it that games built on the same engine by the same team still take up to 8 years to develop?
I understand Nintendo since they barely got to HD development and they use their own engines for everything, but Sony and MS have had studios making HD games since 2004 at the earliest, even fucking Squeenix takes over than a de ade to get games out

It's basically polish to graphics, animation, etc. that are the primary cause for increasing production costs. It's not the production of the actual gameplay that is chewing up all the money in game development. It's not even the marketing like so often claimed. It's just making the game look pretty that is.

Those handheld games had a definite jump in quality from the 3DS so it's not an issue. PS4 to PS5 games though? The jump is so minuscule it doesn't seem like a jump at all.
I don't know much about designing. When I do designs I do take twice as much time as my drawing board phase just to make things look pretty, but when you do the same formula over and over you get to a point where you know what to do, why is it that designers still take so much time then?

Another problem are people that are currently in game dev AAA are incompetent fucks mostly. even if you have 1-3 masters of their trade, the rest of the team pulls them down. last but not least, the publishers. they are only looking for one thing, money, they don´t care for quality, innovation or niche games, they care for inclusion, representation & visuals, surface level shit. when your product needs depth you´re not gonna find anything in AAA development.
