Yeah, the last game I played is about 12 years old now. Back when the game still resembled classic Harvest Moon.

I look at the new trailer, and it resembles more of a mobile game. What is it called? pioneers of Olive town? The artstyle doesn't look like HM anymore. It looks like diet-Rune Factory. actually, it kind of resembles the style that Natsume used when they original stole the Harvest Moon name.

But honestly, look at the Olive Town trailer again. The guy chops down full trees in a single swing, and then a bunch of cheap looking wood and sap(?) icons scatter on the ground, before they're all instantly absorbed into the player.
And when you pet animals, they use the same shitty hand waving animation that doesn't even touch the animal directly.

Maybe when Story of Seasons actually looks like the Harvest Moon game I imagined I'd be getting around this time, then I would be interested.

It's definitely made it rough on Marvelous since plenty of westerners still don't know that Story of Seasons is the Harvest Moon they actually liked.

Harvest Moon isn't actually Harvest Moon, something to do with name rights but the original franchise is called Story of Seasons now. Nu HM is made by a different company that owns the rights to the name but that's it.

Rune Factory is better anyways.

Bitch, I started with the original HM on SNES.(emulated) Which was Simply Harvest Moon. Moved on to HM64 which I owned, then Friends of Mineral Town emulated, where I wrote a romance guide on geocities. Rented A Wonderful Life and hated it. Then I owned Magical Melody for gamecube and love it. Then after some years I tried HM DS on emulator, and it felt kind of funny, so I skipped ahead to Sunshine Islands. I never bothered with the 3DS, so I missed out on all that. And now I'm looking at HM again, and I'm like "ew...". It didn't go in the direction I wish it had gone.

I think my experience with Stardew Valley made me appreciate all of the features that HM had. Because as good as Stardew is, it was missing a lot. So I was expecting HM to be significantly better than Stardew. But now HM looks more simplified. More cosmetic based, like Stardew.

Always wondered, what Harvest Moon has what Rune Factory doesnt have? It seems RF has everything HM has plus combat/rpg elements? Like why would anyone buy HM over RF? Honestly curious what gameplay elements are exclusive to it. Talking about newer/current games

HM is more casual, some people want a more casual experience, that's about it imo

It just has deeper farming mechanics these days. Also not everyone is into the RPG and/or fantasy elements of Rune Factory. I think they're decent companion series'.

Considering that Rune Factory has 6 games total and that only 2 of those 6 games are any good (3 games if you emulate with cheats), HM/SoS is still better. Not talking about natsume shovelware either.

Pioneers of Olive Town will likely be a great game if Trio of Towns is anything to go by.
I only hope that they put some real work into making the characters expressive since they're doing another game without character portraits.

That's a big part of it. The old characters were about 2 heads tall, an the new characters are about 4 heads tall, because they need enough body space for cosmetics.

Cosmetics shouldn't be the main concern of HM. It should be an afterthought. They should be working on other aspects of the game. I mean hell, look at the terrible lighting. The game should work a little harder at making the world beautiful. make it a land that you actually want to cultivate. Not some neon green mess.

As much as I disliked A Wonderful Life, the art style was on point. The characters were cute, and the landscape used pleasant earth tones that made everything look natural and peaceful. I kind of thought that they would keep that style, only improve upon it. You know, high res textures, higher polygon models. Better animations. Better lighting. Why can't we have something like that instead?

First of all who says cosmetics are a main concern? Second of all there's cosmetics in most 3d HM games even if they're just palette swaps including the game you posted.

So as the games improve obviously the character customization improves with it. Soi I dont see the point with trying to paint it as a negative.

There was a remake of tale of two towns that wasn't brought over that released after Trio of Towns.

Why can't characters just look like this? I figure the old artist left a long time ago. But just get someone to ape his style. Just make these characters in 3D.

Cosmetics would be fine if other aspects of the game were improving in a satisfactory way. But they're not. So therefore, cosmetics are a waste of time. Instead of an artist fashioning outfits for the character, they should be working on the animations, or texture work or lighting. Pretty much anything else that takes priority over cosmetics.

But they put priority on cosmetics, because it panders to people who care more about their identity in the game than the actual gameplay.

I got Trio of Towns a year or so ago and it just felt off to me. I think it was a lack of a cohesive tone given the fact that the farm and 3 towns are all vastly different to eachother. I know some people probably like the variety, but I couldn't get along with it. Is the Friends of Mineral Town remake good?

For what it's worth, I'm fine with it. I'm sure the same can be said of others here too. It's just that the ones who bitch are obviously going to be more noticeable than the ones who are fine with it.
