Has there been a game since this that has better sound design/direction?
Has there been a game since this that has better sound design/direction?
No, game sound peaked with Thief.
Arx Fatalis
Will give it a whirl
THIEF THREAD
THE SWORD IS A SHIT LEVEL, FUCK YOU ALL
first thing that came to mind, good post
Nope. Suck my farts nerd.
>t. got molested in a carnival funhouse
Is there a list of the best FMs?
I fancy playing some but don't want to sift through garbage.
criminally based post, for anyone that goes to install this make sure you get arx libertatis mod to mend a lot of the fucky early 2000s jank
yeah, the soundscapes in Arx Fatalis are incredible
I remembering hearing people claim Thief's use of sound is a lost technology and no game since has been able to replicate the game's ability to simulate the direction where a sound is coming from. No idea if that's horseshit or not.
what are the best FMs that are like bonehoard bros?
the sword is at least better than a good chunk of 2's missions.
>no game since has been able to replicate the game's ability to simulate the direction where a sound is coming from
Technically bullshit, a lot of fps games you can tell foot steps, guns etc but Thief does it all so much better, It has the best sounds for walking on metal, carpet, wet floor, stone floor etc
valve games have impeccable sound design but HL2 comes the most to mind
ok, so what does HL2 do well?
What they mean by that isn't neccessary the quality of the sound files the game uses (though they're great too), but rather how the game realistically calculates the travel of sound in space. On pic related, in most video games you would hear the guard's cough from the front, whereas in Thief you will hear it from left.
I played till the bank level of Thief 2 and dropped, can't remenber the reason. But I do remenber Thief 2 having each level with a main gimmick that I disliked, ship and recieving was a pain in the ass, the police station one was against my playstyle of black jacking every nigger in front of me and there was that giant city escape level. yikes.
Thief one best levels are the first one, the Opera from Gold and Assassins.
Not him, but HL/vALVE GAMES has more iconic sound design than tech behind it. No wonder that HL1 sound effects became a meme because of how good they are.
I remember someone saying here that it is patented technology but it probably just isn't worth implementing a system like that for most games if it's not going to play a major role in the gameplay like in thief
play dark mod

Zig Forums has rotted your brain, you have to relearn english
Escape from Tarkov does this
What are you talking about, mutt?
the tailing in assassins gets boring on repeat playthroughs and ramirez manor is a bit small
I remember liking assassins a lot because it was the most vanilla "thief" mission in the game, the same reason why I loved Lord Bafford's Manor.
>he didn't like shipping and receiving
you have awful taste, easily one of the best levels in the series
i will agree with you that the city escape level was pretty lame, though
>find code
>walk back to terminal
>go back to building
>walk back to terminal
>go back to building
Back tracking the level, and don't even have interesting loot.
Switch Lost City and Assassins and you're golden.
>back to terminal
did you go to the first terminal in the stage every time? usually each locker has a terminal close by enough that the walk isn't really worth mentioning imo
and i liked the little lore tidbits and the secrets, like the armorer making shit for the hammers and being unable to sell them since they're a bunch of basically broke jobbers, or that dude who's been prostituting in the upstairs room that you've gotta arrow the elevator button to get to
pic related is a compilation i hunted down based off recommendations, but i haven't played them yet. They're pretty highly rated by the cummunity at least.
this game is a great rollercoaster, i'd even say it's better than 2 solely for it's amazing attention to detail building up this fantastic world and contextualizing the importance of technology and light versus the trickster's outside nature influence and darkness as a whole.
I think Thief is best experienced when you learn everything from the level, so it takes 20 minutes exploring everywhere and after that, you try 100% it.
That level was huge and I was still trying to understand the gimmick, by 30 minutes in it, I only want to finish it.
I just said the sound design, but the world design and player immersion is also great.
