its still the best smash too.

Perfect timing for this thread. I just finished Onimusha: Dawn Of Dreams earlier today and holy shit, what a great game. I was really excited to play it and it more than lived up to my hype.

Breath of the Wild

Tes 4

Does it count if a game greatly exceeded my expectations? Because Xenoblade X. I wasn’t expecting much of anything from it but it blew me away.

Elden Ring

xenonauts

Jackie Chan Stuntmaster

cringe.
came in with 0 expecations playing it the first time this year and saw it for the garbage it is.

Main reason I bought a PS4 last year and was not disappointed

Moon RPG. Knew it had soul, it HAS SOUL.

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord. I expected it to be Warband with better graphics and (eventually) more features.

Yakuza 0

Attached: Spicy.gif (112x100, 320.62K)

Xenoblade DE impressed me. I thought it would just be dumb weebshit but it was actually dumb weebshit with a good story.

Heroin

RE4
It lived up to all its praise

Nioh 2

AA2

Beat me to it.

based.

thumper. Exactly what I wanted.

DMC5

The Evil Within surpassed them

Super Mario Odyssey.

After all the positive reactions, I was hoping it would finally be a new Mario that could instill the same childlike sense of wonder in me as Yoshi's Island and Mario 64 did back in the days. It did just that. The worlds were small, distinct and filled to the brim with things to discover.

H

botw was so much more than what i imagined

did you ever play hat in time? i thought it was so much better

BotW

they actually just let me go do whatever the fuck I want, it's a well realized sandbox imo

Halo 2 was awesome when I was a kid. I guess Halo 3 was great as well. I try to never get excited about much anymore and just let myself be surprised

Fable 3, Peter Molyneux is a genius and he pulled through in every way of his vision.

Monster Hunter World
The Witcher 3
Portal 2
Nioh 2 (Not 1)
Noita
Vanquish
Mass Effect 3
All met the expectations I had and did not exceed them.

Half Life: Alyx

Not him but A Hat in Time, while incredibly charming, is lacking for me when it comes to interesting level design.

I haven't. Maybe I'll check it out.

Ocarina of Time back in 2012

half life alyx. was expecting a tech demo like the rest of the series is and boy did it do the bare fucking minimum with its shitty VR gimmicks

glad i got a rental headset instead of this pricey shit they try to push on you

Seconding this. I just wish it had more levels like Mafia town or whatever it was called.
I enjoyed it far more than odyssey

Control was far better than my expectations.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was an amazing game but I still feel like I’ll never play it again.

Sonic Mania

Literally no other game lived up to the hype but Halo 3

You fags need to accept this

Jackie Chan Stuntmaster

DMC5

This, but with Death Stranding

NFSU

pic related. I still remember, my brother was 13 and i was 11.. we had always played FF, wild arms, chrono cross, etc growing up.. eventually we see this tales of symphonia game and my brother gets SUPER hyped, gets the art book and everything. I remember sitting next to him looking at the art book thinking "huh, this game looks pretty cool." then we got the game and it was so fucking good. still one of my favorite jrpgs.

it's a great memory

Attached: ToS.jpg (616x353, 137.8K)

DMC5
The Witcher 3
Dragon Quest XI

My brother and I still enjoy God of War 3

none because i either have high expectations and get disappointed or i have no expectations and get pleasantly surprised

Sekino, Monkey dies twice

Attached: 1603415238868.jpg (1181x758, 78.47K)

Then it doesn't count, user. We're talking about games that lived UP to your expectations, not beyond.

legend of grimrock 2

Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town

Undertale
played it as soon as it came out with basically no expectations

Bro, spoilers.

lived up to, or greatly exceeded? if it's just lived up to, there are plenty (all pretty old games at this point other than nier automata), but greatly exceeded is a different question, the two that I think of from the top of my head are xenoblade 1 and radiant historia.

Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled. I had hopes with the devs who made it and they didn't disappoint (at least on the major parts)

Attached: 1460687368534.png (1414x1349, 1.18M)

Death Stranding.
Fantastic game.

its been like a decade but you have 5 seconds threads still trigger me
you think template threads are bad now? i'll never forget the day when literally every single thread on the board was YOU HAVE 5 SECONDS, for hours until mods stepped in and started banning/deleting.

do you mean exactly lived up to them or can i also say one that exceeded it? if so i'd have to say RE4. i thought that a shitty third person zombie shooter from 2005 could never ever be one of the best games of all time but holy shit this game is awesome

do vns count? I first went into steins;gate thinking that i fucking HATED vns from posts on Zig Forums, i thought they were the absolute cringiest shit. Someone told me that he tried doing something that he hated doing and he ended up loving it, so i was like "eh fuck it, i'll try steins;gate." went in completely blind, WANTED to hate it.. fucking started feeling emotions after like 30 minutes, got COMPLETELY engrossed in the story, played for a few days etc.

fast forward a few weeks, went into muvluv completely blind off of an user's recommendation. I finished extra, unlimited, and alternative in like 3 or 4 days. holy fuck they were so amazing.

now VNs are one of my favorite genres. Lesson learned, always try shit that you think you hate

Garry's Mod

Outer Wilds

i love vns man, such an underrated medium

you too fellow muvluvchad

Attached: based.png (888x894, 520.32K)

Its much worse now. At least this provokes discussion about video games and not e-celebs or politics

StarCraft 2(Wings of Liberty)
Portal 2
Half-Life Alyx
