Read Tao Te Ching as generously as you can: find arguments and interpretations that make it sound reasonable. It's a rather vague and somewhat hard to read text, but the philosophy it spawned makes a lot of sense. You may want to read several translations, as they can differ a lot depending on how the translator interprets the text.
And don't worry about 'misinterpreting' the text: It's not a holy text where there is one canon interpretation promoted by some church; Chinese scholars have been arguing about and twisting its meaning for over 2000 years, so you'll be in good company.
A more light reading would be "Zhuangzi", which reads more like a collection of short stories meant to exemplify how a Taoist should be, but you'll miss some Tao Te Ching references if you don't read that first. It's probably best to just read the "Inner chapters", which are the oldest part of Zhuangzi and generally considered to be written by one author with a coherent vision. The "Outer chapters" have some good stuff, but also a lot of repetition and some Confucian garbage.

This features three of the early (now public domain) English translations side-by-side, along with the original Chinese text. All three of these translations take a lot of liberties, but the website runs a handy javascript that lets you select characters in the original Chinese text to see their meanings. Together with a proper translation (Jane might be good, I've read Derek Lin's translation taoism.net
Also, probably the best way to go about it is to not worry and just read a translation. Worrying about the translation is details, that you can deal with later if they seem important to you.

How many of your lives? It's not unusual to lose 1 life against Stage 7 Aya. With how the AI works, it's pretty much expected that you die once, unless you are unusually good.
Her EX and Level 2/3 can be dealt with by streaming (be prepared to L2 if you get pushed up against the wall). Her boss has some dangerous attacks, so try to reflect it by hitting the spell score thresholds.
It's a good idea to read up on the scoring system so that you can get your scoring extra lives, and build spell points quickly so that you effectively can reflect the boss.
Which character do you play as? Some of them are much better to building score fast (like Marisa and Youmu).

Kill fairies and spirits in a way that trigger big chains for big score and meter gains.
Use L2 charges to clear your screen of bullets.
Hit spell score thresholds (100k/300k/500k) to get free boss summons and potentially unsummon the boss on your screen. (Reset your score by not hitting anything for a second or so.)
It's pretty fun, because it's pure dodging and little routing. Also, multiplayer!

I do the previous stages flawesly and end up with 3 lives against Aya, then she might drain me dry or leave with 1 live left which means Komachi also drains me dry

Yeah that Remilia-esque attach she does fills the screen easily and i get cornered on the wall so the EX finish me off
