Sonic games were never good. The whole idea was always "speed" but it was never implemented correctly. You either run slow as fuck, run so fast you glitch through the terrain or you just hold a button to automatically win the level.

Sonic games are basically based around clearing levels fast, in contrast with Mario which is more precision platforming. While you don't necessarily "need" to go fast, there are upshots ranging from something simple like a point bonus or some alternate route that you could only get to by building up speed.
A key example? Sonic CD, which is ironically more platforming/exploration-heavy. In addition to the time travel mechanics (which Sega even implemented a failsafe for via the Spring pits), the game's unlockables are gated behind the Time Attack, where getting a faster overall time (the times for all of the stages are totaled on the menu) unlocks other stuff like the D.A. Garden or the Special Stages in Time Attack.

And given that Sonic has had some stinkers even before he went 3D (Knuckles' Chaotix in particular is one where people generally go "everything except the actual gameplay and level design is good"), I'm pretty sure people who've played Sonic games can recognize a bad game.
