If they do happen they're very rare, at least for me. I would use an ethernet cord but I cannot be fucked running a cord through the walls all the way into my room, and I'm not degenerate enough to just leave exposed wires along the ground.

You're conflating outcomes with indicators. Ping (an indicator) is not synonymous with "undesirable elements" (an outcome). Many times ping only causes a delay for the high-ping player's input, and has no effect on the other player(s).
Additionally, visible ping is bad information that players are unable to contextualize properly. It's an easy scapegoat for any gripe you have against another player.
They killed you? Must be their ping.

Instead of blaming themselves for being bad, they blame the ping.

in many fighting games, lag is accounted for by delaying the game's inputs for BOTH players. even if your wifi is "good", the ping spikes that happen all the time with it will have the input delay spike and the game freeze and stutter to account for that. the dude on wifi is actively making the game worse for everyone he plays against
