the idea that that the character's aren't truly dead isn't even the real problem, the problem is that most the dr2 cast sucks, so whether they live or die doesn't matter. Even if the 3rd game flat out said "it didnt matter" the characters and their experiences were handled so much better the meta twist itself became the thing the characters overcame.
