Good except that the protagonist talks a ton, you have to play as a woman, too much exposition, and press X to baby ruins it.

It's shit.

>muh vagina
absolute shit "game"

It's okay, but it feels like a step backwards from SOMA.

I imagine that they wanted to return to form on the limited light-based horror and hide-and-seek monsters of the Dark Descent while still trying to capture some of the emotion of the story and character choices in SOMA. But it kind of fumbles on both fronts, because the horror waivers for the sake of the story's pacing, but the nature of Amnesia's premise keeping the player in confused isolation makes it hard to know or get attached to any of the multiple side-characters you get to meet once before they immediately die.

So it's just sort of fine. Better than a lot of the shovelware on Steam, but not the big innovator for horror that it was back in the day either.

Wait for the coomer mods

Awesome story, but the protagonist's constant speaking ruins a lot of the setting. Loved the Empress, the dark world, the ghouls, and all the locations you visit. Not as good as Soma, but decent.

Mediocre.

I really liked the alternate world but the game is more focused on the story of the protag and her family.

I've always disliked horror stories with a big emphasis on torture. But for some reason it didn't bother me as much in the first game as it did in Rebirth. Maybe because the theme of torture is all past-tense in the first game and never actually seen. It's used to emphasize just how far gone Daniel was as a person, doing whatever horrible thing he was told to do in a desperate desire to save himself. So it becomes a "dark descent" following his trail of increasingly weak justifications until it finally reaches the peak of murdering an innocent child, something so terrible that he purposely destroyed his own mind to escape the truth of.

But in Rebirth it goes for the Black Mirror theme of people being so goddamned casually evil that they torture countless innocents on mass forever for the sake of immortalizing an evil dictator and powering their light bulbs. It's like it's so monstrous that there's no grounding in any level of relatability anymore. But I guess that's where it's meant to be more cosmic horror than a debate of grey morality. But I just find certain aspects of it more gross or shocking than actually frightening or narratively interesting.

I think they watered down the consequences of dealing with monsters too much to the point where just letting yourself get caught actually felt beneficial in some cases.

But I liked the feel of the puzzles. Gathering items you need, fixing and figuring out bizarro pieces of technology in the other world, etc. I just wish progress felt a little less disjointed. It seemed like every time you solved a major puzzle and got back on track the world would just collapse beneath your feet.

The scariest part of the Dark Descent for me is when you open every cell in the Nave, and then they all slam shut at once and Daniel experiences a hallucination of the prisoners screaming and banging on the doors. I agree with your comparison with Black Mirror, though given the religious devotion I can understand the context better. The episode where people are trapped in eggs to be tortured for 1000 years was almost idiotic in its cruelty, whereas the Dark World in Rebirth is tragic in that it has an effective point, but it ultimately is just, "keeping the lights on." Reminds me a lot of how the WAU in SOMA would recreate humans in the form of AI using their brainscans without any regard for quality of life, only the survival of their existence, that "walking corpses will do." The inhabitants of the Dark World can avoid nonexistence through the harvesting of vitae and subjecting themselves to torture, and perhaps one day they could be "saved," similar to how the humans in SOMA can exist in an extremely limited way through machinery. But what's the point if you have the conscious awareness of an active organism without free will or the ability to sense and understand your environment? It's like trapping your mind inside a toaster with no ability to see, feel, hear, smell, or taste.

No Belly Expansion scenes. 0/10

Felt that. I preferred that "dying" would put you forward, since I didn't actually die very often, so when I found this out the game was almost over. As compared to the immersion breaking from dying setting you back. I also played before the patches, so the fear flashes were too common.

Huge improvement in puzzles, and really felt like Dark Descent, perhaps even better. But you're right that you could never 'make progress.' The game was a lot of filler, and you always got set-back, and then would cheat with the Traveller's Locket to move ahead. Though, I did like that the world literally would collapse often, because the feeling of being sent back to the caves after being in the over world was heart-wrenching, since it was so miserable and dark. They really did an amazing job making caves scary. That first section where Tasi panics from falling, and gets lost felt like real life.

WTF is this ?

Bull shit, the gay couple in this game gets it as bad as anyone. I'm not sure why the relationship was emphasized at all for how quickly and brutally it ends.

Complete nonsense from start to finish. Literally everything they did was stupid and wrong. Other than the fort the entire game is a horrible blunder.

early on transportation to the other world ruined the tension, and those african mask jpegs were stupid as fuck

I guess I sympathized with the WAU and characters in SOMA more because there was zero malicious intent in any of it. It was the tragic horror of an artificial intelligence trying its best to follow its vague directive to preserve life no matter the cost as well as seeing the extremes that people took in the face of their own mortality.

The Dark World has a similar theme with people simply trying to stave off death, but it's treated more like an evil corporation normalizing treating people like cattle to be slaughtered, or a dark God not even flinching at the idea of consuming the lives and suffering of countless innocents. When I saw there was a choice to blow everything and everyone up I leapt at it. The other endings are so bad in every way that the commit suicide option was 100% the best option.
