Is it because he's the otaku power fantasy? Do you nerds look at him and think "he's just like me"?
Why is Travis such a popular character?

Travis used to be based when he was a fellow virgin in the first game just like me.
And then NMH2 happened.
First game "he's just like me". Second game he's the otaku power fantasy
Travis isn't really that popular.
he's a loser a fellow virgin a neckbeard(in spirit)
he also is a Zig Forumsfag his body rivals Brad Pitt's in Fight Club
he's desperate for sex can't forget about that
So does that make him /ourguy/?
>gets laid
>starts a family
>then it all gets to him and he runs off to the woods to play games ans build model kits
He's still based
i never understood the power fantasy/self insert argument, honestly. there's really no game out there that delivers such an immersive experience one could stick the landing on the perfect mental acrobatic routine. theres an argument for table top and text based games, shit, maybe even silent protag/character creation games but for more conventional vidya?
as an adult or even in adolescence its plainly obvious you're staring at a screen holding a controller or kbm. you press buttons and click around to choose dialogue options, if any at all, to spout pre-recorded, written and edited lines only to expect the same in return.
Does anyone older than a child really, honestly, seriously, believe when they're playing they're actually Geralt of Rivia? Travis Touchdown? Fucking Doomguy?
It's not about literally being them, retards. It's like "oh I would said the same" kind of thing.
Yes, people get to play as characters they see as cool and pretend to be them.
is that the reason i play as melting?
Travis is at his core more of a warrior than anything; I cant realistically relate to him. His geekiness is more of a character flaw which is a pleasantly unsanitized but not moralfaggy portrayal of the subculture.
He protec
He attak
But most importantly
He feed cat
He's a dork with balls and is unhinged about everything. He has relatable elements but has enough personality that you can be really entertained with his antics.
I think his voice actor is what really sells travis for me with small details like him pronouncing Japanese words like cosplay or moe in a Japanese accent really selling the Americanized Otaku
I was going through other characters in my mind and Gene from GodHand is very similar to Travis. Both have a sense of moral duty and respect for their foes, in a campy way.
So OP, do you think every character that you like is just like you? Are there really people who do that?
The "he's just like me" bit was a genuinely funny aspect of Travis' character of NMH1.
He's a badass in the sense that he's incredibly skilled in fighting, but this skill has come from teh fact that he's a turbonerd who practised and trained obsessively. The only thing that separated travis from the average Zig Forumsirgin is that his obsession and dedication happened to be to practising fighting and working out rather than autistically mastering a videogame.
But despite being good at fighting, which is typically thought of as an "alpha" trait, Travis is still definitely a nerd, with all of the associated social ineptitude that goes with that. This is shown and played up for laughs by the fact that (in NMH1 at least) he's clearly a virgin desperate for a whiff of pussy and is easily manipulated by that.
NMH had a lot of theming and commentary, but I still took a pretty positive message from it: no matter if you're a sleazy, coomer weeb who's delusional enough to think you can be a badass by buying a lightsaber off eBay and learning everything you know from wrestling tapes, you can still make something of yourself if you put in the work.
For as much of a jackass Travis is, he's still going to the gym, still doing community service jobs and learning new skills. I respect it.
People who like travis for being cool are missing the point that the game conveys. Travis paints himself as a badass assassin like some cool anime protag. But it's juxtaposed with him being a loser otaku who lives in a motel in a dilapidated city and does shit jobs for assassin gigs. He kills people and justifies it by saying he's fucked up and it's a dog eat dog world. But that's also just him thinking it's cool to act that way. He's a sociopathic Zig Forums-tard and even as the best assassin, isn't very smart and plays into sylvia's hand because he still has the personality of a loser simp.
This is a good thing though, his character is interesting because of those negative merits next to what he thinks he is.
How did he get affiliated with the UAA, did he just laser an assassin one day and has just been fighting anyone who finds him ever since?
also his boss theme is great youtube.com
I liked that he was a giant loser in the first game instead of being perfect.
It's only NMH2 that goes a bit far into him actually being successful/cool
Fuck the baseball missions
Doesnt that get undercut my the whole UAA being a lie at the end of NMH?
You're absolutely right. If you want escapism then kill yourself with alcohol. If you want a power fantasy get a twitter account. Playing as someone else is unsatisfying as a power fantasy, and I feel like there's a reason you mostly hear it from people from the outside looking in
No, that just means his motivations were piss poor.
He still put in the work and accomplished the thing he set out to do, which was becoming #1, and whether he got the reward is a different discussion.
The teaser trailer is canon. Try to ignore the worst voice acting in gaming history while you're watching it.

I'm talking about Captain Vladimir, not Travis
I just thought a nerd buying a Lightsaver was cool. Watching him grow and shit from 1 to TSA is pretty nice. I'm sure 3 will be the best in the series.

He's probably the most well written character in all of gaming. His motives and personality are intricately woven into the themes of the plot.
