I don't even like Animal Crossing. But had the awards been in April and covered the year from April to April, then it would have been a clear no questions about it winner.
But since the awards are now half a year later, recency bias will just give it to something else entirely while Animal Crossing will barely even receive anything but maybe a courteous acknowledgement of how it existed at best.
Now does that mean that Animal Crossing got shafted or anything? No I wouldn't say so.
As I said I am not even a fan of Animal Crossing myself. But when the time of the year can so massively affect the results to no fault of the games themselves, then it's kind of difficult to take the awards seriously. As if there weren't already other reasons not to take them seriously.

Considering there was no popular WRPGs this year, FFVXI has the best shot as a RPG. Demon Souls is a launch title with a lot more popularity now than TLOU2 - basically how DS got nominated. A FPS game won against Uncharted 4, so Doom could theoretically bet it out. Also, people forgetting RE3 is a thing.
Anything else is a complete wildcard, unless they count remasters/updated ports like Tony Hawk, PR5 or DMC5SE.
