Is the damsel in distress trope actually bad storytelling or does it just trigger the left?

Yes

both

It depends. Often the problem is you don't really care about the damsel because you barely see her except at the beginning and the end. So the protagonist treats her like something special that the audience just doesn't have the same connection to. Which is why often people prefer the relationships (romantic or otherwise) between the hero and his companions over the hero and the damsel.

But yes, it triggers the left just like everything else.

i for one welcome big poofy dresses

No

It's somewhat lazy storytelling but people who pretend it's objectively bad/sexist/etc. are retarded.

It's bad because it's fucking boring

If there's no good reason for the damsel's inability to get herself out of distress, then yes

i want to fuck kh1 kairi
that is all

fixed

It's because it's been done too much without enough variation inbetween.
Any trope can be the victim of this.

Based and Miyamotopilled.

If you base your entire opinion off of a misunderstanding of Antia Sarkesian's stupid argument, then yes, it triggers the left.

No one finds the damsel in distress trope offensive. Just lazy. There's no reason it can't be something else more inventive.

It's just been done to death already and tends to be boring when played perfectly straight.

a damsel in distress is basically a plot device instead of a character, which isn't that bad if you have other female characters. If your only female character is the damsel in distress then girls won't like your game

But she was with Sora the whole time kinda sorta. Please get this bitch out of me.

It's pretty fucking lazy but if they shake it up in almost any way it can be alright.
Triggering lefties is just a bonus.

It’s a bit lazy, but there’s nothing inherently wrong with it per se.

This

depends on how its done. if its the same characters every time it'll instantly have the most diminishing returns doubly so when a character like peach gets kidnapped by the same guy while the damsel is also the love interest of the mc, combine that with peach and mario's relationship being ambiguous doubly so thanks to odyssey. people will dislike the mc for saving the damsel from the same guy all the time while getting nothing in return, they'll hate the damsel for not finding away to deal the threat and for relying on the mc to do everything. in the end to most people the mc while look like a cuck and the damsel will look like slut, which is my nearly every parody of mario makes the ntr joke. zelda is different because its a different zelda everytime and not every zelda is necessarily links love interest. also people just like characters that do something other than get kidnapped, look at how daisy's popularity shot up after oddyssey and her inclusion to smash while only appearing in one mainline mario game which she was a damsel in.

That ain’t daisy in oddsyssey it’s the girl from the arcade dunkey Kong

Dunkey Kong 64 dabbing on meta games decades before its time - guess that’s pretty rare

Just shows people care more about gameplay than story.

kairis problem is that she a reoccurring character in a story driven series and has barely made any progress, sora and riku didn't have any training when they went to look for kairi, but when kairi who is already training gets told to train some more when she wants to go look for sora. also she was the damsel in her own game?
i know it's not daisy. i wasn't talking about Pauline that was in donkey kong. daisy became popular despite her only mainline game being a gameboy game.

I thought it worked in Paper Mario, if only because she still got to actually do something.

It's not inherently bad, but it's also not inherently good. Tropes/conventions are tools, not guarantees of something being good or bad. Just like subverting expectations doesn't automatically make something good.
I will say that people are getting so obsessed with subverting expectations that something being played entirely straight surprises me now, though.

>no more Paper Mario ever again

No the damsel in distress trope gives me a raging fucking hard-on and so it must continue

Its fine, it was just over done at one point. Now Its swinging hard the opposite way where the women are told they are strong and brave for doing nothing. Im hoping it will equalize out some time in the future and we wont get constant extremes in either direction

This, but unironically.

Girls love when a man comes to rescue and treat them like a princess, except those girls that their father hated them and grew up hating men.

There's no reason why it should be something else either, it's a perfectly fine motivator and/or initial incident, especially when writing for a game that explicitly isn't heavily story focused.
This idea that it's inherently lazy or bad is just a thin veil to hide the fact that yes, leftists are offended by the woman being helpless and treated as a prize to be won.

Depends on how much time they give to making you give a shit about the damsel in distress. In games like mario it doesn't really matter since the plot is just dressing for the mechanics but if you're going for a more serious story then you'll wanna give us a reason to give a shit, otherwise pretty much any other woman in the game will get more popular by default. DMC4 was one of the worst in my opinion, since even if Kyrie is really god damn pretty she had literally no personality. Even her brief voice only appearance in 5 at least made her motivational.

The first paper mario was a great damsel case. The player got to check in on her every chapter, learn more about the next area mario had to go to, it expanded on Peach, and she could send items/badges to Mario to help him. Then it all got tied together at the end where twink helped power up the star beam with peach's prayer.
