curing cancer implies some level of biological/medical control over the human body we are nowhere near currently possessing. The implied benefit of curing all the many types of cancer would be tremendous advances across nearly every field of medicine.

You can feed the hungry by dumping rice on them. Feeding the hungry does not solve the fundamental problems the hungry have, IE systemic poverty, shitty governments, disease, lack of education, poor infrastructure, etc. What it does guarantee is an explosion of population, making all those existing problems that aren't solved by 'more food' even worse.
