About to start this game for the first time. Which starting class should I pick? Already decided on getting the Master Key as a gift.

up to you bro, you should go for a Strength build and start with the Bandit imo

>inb4 people tell him to slog through that fucking sewer garbage

Deprived

Pyromancer

Don't take the Master Key. The Pendant has a much cooler use, though it won't be apparent immediately.
As for class, depends on what build you want to play. I recommend Pyro because fire balls are baller.

I wouldn't recommend first-timers take the pendant. They wouldn't get how or where to use it.

>As for class, depends on what build you want to play
A paladin with badass heavy armor, who wields a 1h mace and shield and can cast heal, exorcism and buff spells

Miyazaki, the game director, suggested players should take the Pendant when the game came out. If there's anyone we can trust it's him.
Then pick Cleric, duh.

you don't need the master key to skip the depths entrace, you can go through darkroot basin into valley of drakes and then grab the key to the new londo door right at the start of that entrance

To be fair, I was also considering Knight...

master key kinda spoils some of the exploration.

never thought of that

Cleric gives you the mace and earlier access to miracles, whereas Knight gives you the heavy armor and a bit of Faith to get you started (though you can get a mace-like weapon very early).

Avoid the master key. YOu're just gonna get lost and ruin the great level progression and design. Go in with no guides at all.

Warrior is bread and butter starting class. But classes don't matter that much and you can change weapons really fast and the first merchant has a great selection of weapons. He even has chain mail which is actually critically under-rated.

The pendant or old witches ring are much better for a first time gift.

Pyromancer. Your early level ups will be cheaper, and it otherwise takes a while before a pyromancy glove becomes available.

This. I kinda regret I didn't pick the pendant for my first playthrough when I later figured it out.

>when I later figured it out.

dude, fucking spoilers?

What? I specifically avoided saying what it's used for.

Knight

Thief

The fact it has a secret use IS A FUCKING SPOILER IN ITSELF JACKASS!

Knight, don't pick the master key.

The main argument against picking the Master Key for a first playthrough is that it permits a substantial degree of sequence breaking for the early game, which can easily lead to you becoming lost and underpowered relative to where you should be if you have no clue where to go. For that reason, either of the rings, pendant, or the firebombs are all probably better options. You can pick the key if you really want, but don't get disheartened when you are constantly realizing you are not where you should be and have no idea how to proceed.
Any of the starting classes are good except for Hunter. It just depends on what you are interested in.

Well you can't really miss it anyway.

Thief is also a poor starting class because he starts with the Master Key and his stat spread is bad unless you like using both sorceries and miracles, which is gimping yourself. Dex builds are better off with the Warrior, Pyro, Knight, or Wanderer.

Pendant doesnt do anything take master key its the only gift that has some real use past the first boss imo. Go cleric if you want extra heals and into faith builds. Strength bandit is easy, just go end strength and health (cant remember if its vit in 1)

pyromancer has best starting stats.

Knight is easy more and in my opinion the most ds1 type experience you can get, he has poise, a shield you have no real reason to ever replace, a decent stating weapon, and good armor with high defence (actually matters in this one). If that isn't enough to conceive you for a first play though he also looks pretty bad ass. Starting gift you can get the black firebombs to absolutely shred the first boss but that is really only recommended if you're speedrunner or have played the game a few times. The cleric is also cool but getting knight's armor is a bit harder and you won't fat roll right away, with a little grinding and co-op you get to throw lightning which has no business being as good as it isbespecially in the early game. If you go cleric go strength and faith. The mace scales really well with strength and it's a fucking mace so it's badass. Sorcerer is not something I'd recommend for a first run, pyromancer is cool and fucks shit up but you have to level up the fire glove and pyromancies have no stat requirements so you can get pyromancies on anyone really.
TL:DR Go str on your first playthrough and play knight, only go cleric if you think you can handle it though he's better for a play though after you got used to being a physical character.

i gave up on this today. i cant beat o&s, i will never beat them. people here seem to love this fight but it makes me feel so miserable

Bandit or Pyromancer

>deprived
lowest tier bait there is
>thief
literally cheating, also don't pick the master key for your first playthrough
>knight
don't pick a fat roll class just to get 3% extra damage reduction and some shitty healing spells
>cleric
same as the knight without the fat rolling, I wouldn't pick it unless you're a pussy
>sorceror/pyromancer
this is called "ez mode" but relying on spells for your main offensive power is fun in its own right. I still wouldn't pick them for a first playthrough
>hunter/warrior/bandit
all very solid classes that can be leveled into virtually any melee-focused setup. good starting gear too. not that it matters but most melee pvp builds almost always use one of these
>wanderer
a slightly less optimized version of the hunter/warrior/bandit classes, but the starting gear is more aesthetic so whatever.

How is thief cheating?

I would use the master key, and go to new londo to unlock drake valley and get the sunlight sword and the shield with good fire defense infront of the rotting dragon.

it has the master key by default, which you really shouldn't have access to in your first playthrough. other than that it's actually pretty bad especially if you don't make proper use of backstabs/ripostes.

Is it fair to say that the only hard thing about this game is navigation?

I wouldn't simplify it to "navigation," I would call it "properly working your way through each new area." Another nice way of phrasing it would be "playing the game." Would you think you had really played super mario world and seen all it had to offer in the way it intended if your older brother spoilered you on the star road before you ever picked it up yourself?
