Notch is based but the game suffered due to his laziness. The steve we all know and all the animals were supposed to be placeholders, but they never got updated. Mojang carries on this tradition with slow as fuck updates, always addings stuff and never reworking older items. Like seriously why do some items have one singular use and then never are useful outside of that? Why are some animals completely worthless to tame? I'll get an itch to play minecraft then I realize how shallow the pool is and I stop playing

The only reason for a sequel is a completely new engine. You could get far better performance, way more features, mechanics that are straight up impossible in the current minecraft.
