Easily able to read the faces.

Japan understands what makes characters attractive, and leans into it rather than trying to buck it because of some misplaced social value.

Part of it just comes down to embracing and enhancing traditional gender appeals and roles. Men in history have always liked demure women that need to be protected. Women have always liked strong men. This is all stuff that is extremely apparent in visual design and they go with it.

They've mastered the art of making girls and young boys to look cute and appealing. But render it to 3D and these things will look like an abomination. 2D is a good distraction from 3D. So much better at Character design? I don't know about that. Obviously they are good and obviously they are the masters of cute characters and I thank them for it but when western devs aren't... obsessed with political agendas or social justice virtues, they are quiet good too. I mean I remember fondly the characters of Dragon Age Origins or the Darksiders trilogy, Spellforce 3 too has very interesting characters visually wise or the darkest dungeon. Gears of War trilogy was kino.
