>Are video games of today worse than before?
They are. This is not a secret nor hyperbole.

In many ways yes. Mechanical function, graphical fidelity and hardware power have absolutely been refined to hell and back, but transforming what was formerly a AA business making all the medium-defining titles getting sequels today (sometimes) into the same Hollywood-sized machine it is today leaves you with either over-produced sandboxes/movies sold at $70 + frequent new content-cutting methods being resold in gambling machines or Newgrounds-tier games sold at $20. And don't even get me started with mobile.

Compare the release year titles for the PS2 and PS5. It's over.

-Because jaded Zig Forums posters are not the main audience of games and most people think fondly of their childhood memories.
-No, but the same jaded posters will tell you otherwise.

I'm happy for your ability to enjoy Fortnite and TLoU2 with a straight face too.
I wish these pesky standards didn't always get in my way.

I know that most mainstream titles have insane development times, but PS5 having only one exclusive launch title (a remake) and Xbox not a single one is just fucking crazy.
And people, even on ''enthusiasts'' forum and the like, are OK with it.

>that chromatic taskbar
why is this no longer a thing? i loved this "futuristic" style

yes. it has been statistically verified in what method the most humans find the most engagement in hammering buttons in relation to pictures. now every game leans towards that instead of muddling through and accidentally arriving at something unique and worth time expenditure.

>more games bad
>less games that only pander to me good
okay reddit

I like Automata, Bloodborne and Dishonored 2 a LOT.

Minimalism became an industry standard.

99er here, i literally don't like where this industry has been heading since 2008. ps2 is the last true good console

when you have people defending tlou2 and genshin impact with only "it sold well" you can tell how much worse it got. But its not as bad as peopel think it is I still liked Doom and Ghost of tsuhuma

The only reason to play games at this point is to tap into your inner child. And that’s most strong with games you played as a child.

No. But good games from the past are still better than shit games from the present.

Dont look at me my favourite kingdom hearts are DDD, 3 and MoM

And i prefer FF8 to 7 and Chrono Cross to Chrono Trigger

Agreeable, still glad I switched to PC about a decade ago.

The future is here, and it is flat and boring.

>Agreeable, still glad I switched to PC about a decade ago.
just invest in retro consoles.

The retro gaming market has been hijacked by boomer speculators

Emulating is the best option now

We peaked with Windows 7 aero taskbars.

>The retro gaming market has been hijacked by boomer speculators
>Emulating is the best option now
as someone who was literally born a week after spongebob premiered. you are retarded. invest in old consoles and keep them alive, pc is a shit platform and hasn't been good since 2003. steam ruined it

1998 will never be topped, it's seriously insane. And that chart is missing some gems like Alpha Centauri. I'm so glad I was the right age at the right time.

No, our lives are just worse, and old games remind us of happier times.

>all those exes on the desktop
>not being organized into a folder
jesus christ this hurts to look at
not even the ui it self

nah 99 gave us silent hill. sucks i was born in that year but thank fucking god for emulation

2004 would be better if there was no thief in 1998

>literal retard

You said best about your age cause you'd know emulators predates boomer retroconsoles for awhile. Emulators don't need steam.

1997 - 2001 was the peak of gaming

Not at all. I think we were in a Golden Age of vidya before the rona hit and slowed down development a ton from most studios. I mean think about the amount of kino that has come out in the last 5 years alone

>Splatoon
>Xenoblade X
>Civilization VI
>Bloodborne
>Persona 5
>Mario Odyssey
>Dragon Quest XI
>Watch Dogs 2
>Kingdom Come: Deliverance
>Tyranny
>Control
>Death Stranding
>Breath of the Wild
>Baba Is You

What the fuck does Steam have to do with emulators or PCs in general?

please be irony

All of those are pretty underwhelming when compared to

Yes.

>nintendo okay
>nintendo okay
>strategy game that could be released at any time and it would not matter
>the only ps4 game
>that one jrpg that i never played that probably is decent
>another jrpg
>unironically listing ubisoft games what are you a retard?
>look its a modern elder scrolls made by someone competent
>??
>garbage only known for ray tracing
>underrated
>it's nintendo you know it's gonna be atleast fun
>never touched

Good god, I didn’t realise it was this bad. Those really are the best recent games aren’t they? Also, Bloodborne is almost 6 years old.

2009 is was a phenomenal year for games

I wouldn't say the Golden Age of Vidya (that goes to 1985 - 2002), but we are (probably were now) experiencing a Renaissance of sorts since at least 2017. That year in particular was the best year for gaming since 2004.

I guess if you've only been playing video games for ten years then yes those would seem like a collection of killer apps indeed.

tbf I think the 1997 selection isn't all that great. Quake 2 was much worse than 1, Parappa is cool but not what I'd call a groundbreaking classic, GTA was fun but unpolished as fuck, and Carmageddon is just pretty good.

>top actually good and fun games
>bottom shitty rehashes and consolized garbage
only people who think gaming hasn't gotten worse are retards in denial or so full of shit and think QOL is the only thing that matters

>Xenoblade X
>Persona 5
>Mario Odyssey
>Breath of the Wild
>kino
Especially the open world shit. Garbage taste.

gb2gaia

2009 was firmly new-school with Justin Bieber, Tik Tok by Ke$ha, Fanboy and Chum Chum, Avatar, and other shittastic things that destroyed the 2000s' reputation.

online games are certainly worse, at least as far as pc goes

A lot of the games you listed are good, but they're not "amazing". They come across as far too streamlined to be probably appreciated, and there really isn't anything bold about most games now that appeal to niche audiences.
Instead of appealing to hobbyists and the technical minded, it kind of ignores said audience and just opens the games up to everybody in ways where it kind of hurts the industry itself.

Just take a look at how many people are using games as a stepping stone into working for the likes of Hollywood or vice-versa; its been dangerously corporatised to the point you cannot make computer games in peace anymore unless you're aiming for clout. Its not authentic. Everything just looks generic and has very untalented people dictating what is or isn't allowed in the games. Why do you think HR has become such a huge priority for companies surviving in the modern age? Because they need a defense force from nutters online to avoid getting destroyed by the media. Its all extremely insincered. Nothing is done with honesty anymore.

>pandering to more and more people by following trends of the moment
>lootboxes and other scummy practices
>automation within games like matchmaking and dungeon finder
>blatantly pushing for e-sports when it's always best that it develops naturally
>making dlc before the game is even released
>no mindset of gaining social networking points for whatever vidya activity you're doing

if you like eating shit and playing dudebro games

pretty sure R6 was released in 98

>technical minded
Not him but I never gave a shit about that and I've been playing games since 94. I just want games with adventures that have fun gameplay, music and characters.

Cont.

Though I agree that most games these days are uninteresting.

>Its all extremely insincere. Nothing is done with honesty anymore.

That's because like every other "nerd" hobby, it has been co-opted by normalfags who hate the hobby and hate the people who like it, so they try to transform it into something "acceptable" to them and theirs. They are embarrassed to be a part of it, but it is the only "creative" industry with standards low enough to pay these people because of executives who are desperate to be compared to hollywood jews for status

yes, but you can't have them depict cool and insane shit unless the people working on them have a technical background to be able to fully express its potential. and those kinds of people cant work in peace as easily anymore thanks to social media and the endless drama and distractions in the world now. they're busy keeping their heads above the water and making sure not to say the wrong thing.
that is not how creatives are supposed to work.
