Is there a single other genre that evolved so little in such a long time?
Literally every top down action rpg game is just a reskinned worse version of diablo
I guess you could say all fps games are just doom clones but atleast FPS games evolved and branched out into subgenres and quite a few of them became their own thing but diablo clones are literally just that, clones
Even 20 years later this genre is still the exact same thing it was its fascinating
Is there another genre that didnt evolve at all?
Maybe RTS games

No. When they tried to evolve (vanilla D3 combat), people flipped the fuck out because they wanted looty rooty tooty blast a million niggas with one mouse click

every fighter is just a street fighter 2 rip off

D2 evolved into WoW. I'd have liked a Diablo MMO desu.

You do Diablo 2 a disservice by saying the genre hasn't evolved since it's release.
The genre has evolved and become worse. Diablo 2 is the untouchable zenith of it's genre.

What makes you the fucking judge of whether or not a genre has evolved? Why does a game that takes inspiration from Diablo have to meet your retarded vague criteria?
This is a shitty thread OP you really dropped the ball on this one

3D fighters aren't

There have been small innovations. The core formula is mostly the same, though refined quite a bit. Grim Dawn feels vastly different from D3, which feels different from PoE. Each have their pros and cons. Each have their list of changes from the D2 formula.

then name one fucking diablo clone thats better or significantly different

They didn’t evolve, they dumbed down and introduced a real money auction.

>When they tried to evolve (vanilla D3 combat), people flipped the fuck out because they wanted looty rooty tooty blast a million niggas with one mouse click
What kind on faggotry are you on? Did you watch half of a youtube bloggers video about D3 then pull an opinion out your ass?
>vanilla D3 combat
El oh fucking el

The principles behind Diablo item generation have been applied to a wide variety of games.
Also it's not a genre in the first place, but a subgenre at best.
If you look at the so called "Arena FPS" they didn't evolve at all as well, still rocket jumps, bunnyhopping, even down to the same Quake weapons and pickups. Same can be said for pretty much every specific type of game.

>Evolving the genre
All this means these days is adapting the game to a 'game as a service' model.

I would if I wasn't convinced you would nitpick and complain about literally anything I posted
What you seem to misunderstand is that not every genre can grow at the same pace because there isn't always ROOM to grow.
Take 2d platformers as an example, what can you do here that hasn't been done already? Practically nothing, but it's not like the genre has stagnated because people aren't trying, it's because there's nothing left TO try.
As another user stated d2 is probably the peak of the looter ARPG genre and there's nothing wrong with that

arena shooters evolved into hero shooters

ye thats fair but you are still gay

Throne of Darkness came out shortly before LoD and had a 4-party system of samurais and extensive crafting

you can't improve upon perfection

Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction was literally buff and spam 1 move. One. Melt the screen and pick up goodies, brain-dead high speed runs with enemies that posed zero threat to you, and even if you were a total useless shitter that died to the occasional fetish shaman or blacksoul, or stood in Diablo DPS streams, there was no drawback or adjustment to make.

In vanilla D3, once you hit inferno, before they nerfed the game, even a basic pack of elites or a rare could scoop your ass and facetank your build with ease forcing enrage and just wiping you and a group out. You had to constantly protect yourself, maximize every cooldown, watch every little bit of floor and effect damage, and maintain DPS to kill on time. Some packs with certain mod rolls were impossible to kill for certain builds even. It was completely different than D2X and better, but the babies started to cry because they wanted their Shakos

Just play Nioh. You get all the loot and actually good gameplay.

yeah you either didn't play at launch or you're fucking retarded
d3 was nearly unbeatable without completely cheesing it and skipping all enemies unless you spent thousands of dollars on the real money auction house

vanilla d2 you could easily multi-skill because synergies weren't a thing
I wouldn't call d3 an evolution but an upgrade.

D3 was made with the attitude "D2 goes click click click, D2 is bad, amrite guys".

D2 is stupid in many respects (like top-tier items only available due to bots and duping), but it had soul at least.

I can tell you never beat the game yourself with self-found gear.

>I don't know how mobs work at all therefore game was hard u r just casul
D3 was always still just spam two or three abilities and never at any difficulty required groups for anything, only gear laddering. The
only real significant difference is the loot and item systems. D2 was true procedural generation, you could get lucky and find an
insane item, then invest in it to make it even better. D3 is just rigged casino treadmilling that throttles what loot you get, but also tosses you
a bone once in a while with guaranteed drops. Most retards don't realize they're not even really playing a video game anymore, just these nightmarish skinnerboxes designed by behavioral psychologists and boomers that never even played a game before.

>fireball / icebolt
>frozen orb / meteor / blizzard
>teleport
>static field
>frozen armor

the most cookie cutter build in D2 already has more skills than the D3 hotbar

NoX was a big improvement on D2's formula, but didn't have nearly the same level of marketing.

>Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction was literally buff and spam 1 move
Kek, you're only referring to the online meme endgame content after the grinding with the walkthrough optimal sorc build.
D2 was designed with multiplayer in mind, but it was still made on a time where games were mainly single player, and then open to multi. Not the other way around.
Grow up or have some background before spouting an opinion. Nothing wrong with being young. You're just too stupid, boi

"When you reach the peak, any further move will inevitably lead downhill." -Me
Now get lost

3d was a clear regression

>t. the guy that never reached any peaks in life because he's afraid to go downhill - a.k.a. obese depressive virgin cunt

This is such a stupid fucking mindset. You can't be afraid of failure in life, especially after a huge success.

The genre can't evolve. Diablo 2 was the best game ever made
Pick related. Found in SP using PlugY

I guess if it evolved, it'd be a different genre.

Still, it evolved but I guess most people didn't see it: souls games were closer in spirit to Diablo than anything else out there, exploration and PVP are just what all these Diablo-clones out there miss. It's like people forgot what made D1 and 2 so loved: the slow, careful progression, and cutthroat online PVP.
