'Soul' is a clear and present application effort and thought on the part of a piece of media's creators about what they're making. This is most obvious when a product has small extraneous details that serve no gameplay purpose but are added because the creators were passionate and wanted to make them. Secret rooms, idle animations, joke endings for new game+, messages from devs or characters when you type 'fuck' as a character name, units that have unique barks when clicked on for the 15th time. All of these are examples of soul.

I agree with this, I think when you do something TOO good to begin with then that means there's only one path you can take going forward - making it worse.

A lot of remakes (Spyro and Demon's souls) are remaking the soundtrack and those soundtracks were already good to begin with so all they can do is make a worse one, it's just inevitable and not really their fault, their only fault was in bothering to remake it in the first place.

Soul is when the developers have legitimate passion for the game, rather then just creating it as a moneymaker.
