When does it get fun? I almost quit when i saw that level 9 was just 2 tentacles, and then I wound up quitting 2 levels later

dope ill work on it. I only ever die on boss levels.
Every level with the tentacles is just to restore your health I think. Level 20 is when you get to the first boss.
If you're playing as Nero, i suggest using Tomboy on the first levels to get through them really fast so you can get to the harder levels.

Is this your first action game? I had that kind of mindset once too. These games are made for replays and exploring how deep the combat is, DMC especially. BP is just the perfect way to do that.

Play through it again on a higher difficulty to play around with all the goodies you unlocked by completing it the first time through, and see how much you've improved since you first passed through the early levels

Well, the first boss is in level 20, and the first floor that can give you genuine trouble is level 30. Try to make it to level 30 and if you don't like it at that point don't play it, it's not like it matters.
