What era would you say was the peak of Western video games? Did they ever surpass the Japanese studios at one point?

I honestly believe Skyrim was the peak. Then it tanked
I mean idk right now is pretty good
DOOM and Naughty Dog
Throughout the 90’s and into the mid 00’s western and eastern devs were about equivalent. Both also saw decline after 2007, but whereas western devs declined slowly, eastern devs seemed to drop off of a cliff. However in recent years the east has seen a resurgence while the west has slipped even further, well past mediocrity and into being genuinely terrible.
on consoles? never. pc? the early 2000s. Super hard they crushed japan, there were so many gigantic strides made in internet connectivity that it made gaming accessible and multiplayer on a huge scale that was a novelty with shit like seganet and satellaview. Almost all of it spawned ENTIRELY from the western scene of gamedev.
Yeah, it's called Rain World, faggot.
Obligatory Deus Ex post.
The peak was in 1977-1985. Ever since the NES, Japan has always made better video games than America.
Early PS3/360 days when Japanese developers were lost on how to make HD games so they switch production to handheld shovelware. The time Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas, and Mass Effect came out.
Early 7th gen was when Western game design peaked.
Its been all downhill since then, because thats when AAA devs figured out shit like GaaS and Microtransactions.
80s and 00s. Japan got 90s, 10s and 20s.
So Europeans are obsessed with Americans, who are children, and thus they are pedophiles?

Never change, Zig Forums
I wish the underage could bait better. This is pitiful, a redditor could come up with something better.
lol, West was always better in storytelling and atmosphere, Japs mostly make pedo baits.
'98-'04 had more western than the entire Japanese library. A lot of them still remain unsurpassed in their design.
>user arguing with himself gets banned
Nice.
All games were best between 2000 and 2007. And western games surpassed Japanese ones during that time.
The 90s. They aren't entirely awful now but the 90s was when it was great. Video games are best when they are made and programmed by autistic nerds not made by art people and idea guys then programmed by brown people in third world countries chained to desks.
>Looking Glass
>id Soft
>Troika
>Bioware
>Black Isle
>Bullfrog
>Origin Systems
>Ion Storm
>Maxis
>Sir-Tech
>Monolith
Late 90's and early 00s PC games absolutely surpassed the japanese, there's no doubt in my mind.
Do Japanese IPs made by Western studios count?
Skyrim is always a weird game for me to think about. On release I loved it and spent a ton of hours playing it, but no in 2020 everything about the game just disappoints me. Nothing really changed for me to dislike it. I don't even think it's being burnt out since I still like Morrowind and oblivion and much as I did on release, and I've played a lot more of those than skyrim. Something about skyrim is just odd with how it feels in current year.
Nah that game was always shit newfag
Late 90's, early 2000's was peak, but I wouldn't say Western games were ever better than Jap games. Mid to late 2000's were pretty shitty for Japanese games, but Western games were just as bad back then.
Nothing about pc games surpasses anything lmao
I've always preferred Western games to Japanese ones:
>Jak/Ratchet/Sly
>Psychonauts
>God of War 1-3
>SSX
>Burnout
>Need for Speed
>GTA
>Metroid Prime 1+2
>Rare games
>Halo
>Any other FPS
>Most good open world games
Ok zoomer
When real time strategy games and role-playing games were at their peak.
It depends on the style, retarded. It took the West about 10 years to reach Japan in 2D platform games.
