Big spoilers for a massive classic.
The MC and this guy are rivals in boxing, the MC essentially grows from being a massive cunt to having lots of respect for his rival and the sport. After lots of beating around the bush they have their decisive boxing match. MC loses but agrees it was a good fight and had fun, he's in the locker room with his coach and friends when some news reporters who were monitoring the match come back and inform him that his rival had died from the damage caused in the match.
It's such a big and culturally important death that Japs have actually mourned him in real life and performed ceremonies for him.
