It's the only way to hold a Melee tournament right now with all the Covid related closings.

The Melee tournament was running Slippi, a mod for the game's .iso file which implemented rollback netcode. Nintendo demanded that they cancel it on the grounds that participants could just grab isos from the internet. They were still allowed to host the Ultimate tournament, but they decided either Melee stays or the whole event shuts down, and now we're here.

Nintendo has done other shady behind-the-scenes stuff like actively block companies trying to sponsor or host Melee events. They tried to squash Melee in 2013 with Evo but got a ton of bad PR, so they mostly now just lurk in the shadows and try to sabotage the game. With Covid happening and Melee making a resurgence (with some events not even hosting Ultimate online) they're probably just feeling pressured to get rid of it.

Yeah since Slippi runs on dolphin its an illegal process that makes Nintendo in the right technically. The huge issue here of course is that Melee doesn't have a legal online mode, Nintendo's online in the new smash games is literally the worst in the world, and the ongoing pandemic makes local events impossible. So the choice is either don't have a tournament at all or try to run it on fan made online mods and hope Nintendo doesn't sperg out. Which is a losing bet obviously.

Emulation isn't illegal and neither is Slippi. The only thing Nintendo can actually challenge is the stream part, which is how the event makes money. So it's effectively shutting it down regardless.

This isn't because they don't like Melee tournaments, is it?

Near completely indefensible, considering Nintendo aren't making any money off of Melee and the only reason I can think of for them doing this is I remember someone saying how copyright laws are finicky and if you don't attack everybody at every instance they're broken, then it becomes difficult in court when something actually substantial to attack them happens. Nintender called for a cease and desist of an upcoming online Melee tournament because it would be using Slippi, a mod that allows Melee to run online, and much more smoothly than Ultimate does.
