Kirby characters are pretty static, don't see how he got worse

Bowser is pretty bad. His personality in Super Mario RPG was a really nice novelty but Nintendo as ungracefully applied it to his character in everything at this point where he's this unthreatening buffoon. SMRPG had the narrative context and enough dialogue to back up this decision but the newer games don't even try, he's just pathetic.

Although he was never an outright bad guy (evidenced in Kirby's Adventure), he was still antagonistic to Kirby because he had selfish motivations. Now he's just a friendly party member who only fights Kirby whenever the current game's villain possess him (ditto for MetaKnight). Peak DDD was Super Star Ultra's Revenge of the King, and we've haven't gotten anything close since then.

>Nintendo as ungracefully applied it to his character in everything at this point where he's this unthreatening buffoon
I can definitely see this in the Paper Mario games.

>I can definitely see this in the Paper Mario games.
it bleeds even into stuff like Odyssey. The ending makes no sense.

>Peak DDD was Super Star Ultra's Revenge of the King, and we've haven't gotten anything close since then
i agree with this but holy shit if that bro moment where he throws the tomato at meta knight didn't get me hard

It's only really bad in Paper Mario games and Superstar Saga. Bowser is a serious threat in most of the games and is generally a step ahead of Mario until the final confrontation.

I just really don't get it. The idea wasn't that Mario RPGs have dumb bowser, it was that in SMRPG, Bowser's castle has been completely taken over essentially by demons and he's completely embarrassed and emasculated, having to work with his former nemesis.

In every other game its just "lol bowser is a dumb wacky retard"

I thought Bowser in Odyssey was pretty solid. He acts like a serious villain only determined to kidnap and marry the princess, which is a far better motivation than literally enslaving the universe. I thought the ending was decent too because it doesn't characterize him as too villainous (though maybe it would have been more like SMRPG to make him a sore loser). If the ending came off of a silly slapstick Bowser like you had described then I think the ending would have suffered.

Too many to list from Sonic since most of the cast has been fucked up by hack writers but Tails went from being a smart child able to fight Chaos 4 and fuck up a US military base to a faggot who whines at everything and hides away like a little bitch.

Pretty much the whole Kirby main cast got stripped of whatever personality it had.

It comes across as him having absolutely no control. He's not in any way "defeated" peach just suddenly decides to get the fuck out of there. Why did you even need to "save" her? And he does nothing to stop her.

Bowser is supposed to kidnap the princess, potentially marrying her or take over the mushroom kingdom. In Odyssey he treats it like a sports game he lost. He's not destroyed, defeated, or even convinced of anything. He backs off just because you beat the game basically.

What is he going to do when he just got his ass kicked? The move he can do is just go back home and think of a new plan to win.

He kidnaps her to forcefully marry her and then after the fight he's suddenly trying to win her over with flowers and shit and then just takes defeat. He got his ass kicked but it did nothing to him at all, he's not hurt or anything, he's perfectly fine in the scene right after he "gets his ass kicked". He just concedes like its a game.

I agree with this, the only other way to have him back off would be to just throw him into lava for the nth time. He kind of does the same at the end of Galaxy 1.

I agree with what you're saying, but it's worth mentioning that Bowser does have a few goofy moments in PM64 (like when reading his diary) despite him being totally dominant and oppressive as a villain up to the very end battle.

there's also the time daisy bitch slapped him

Once again else what can he do then? Mario is right there.

He kind of lost his whole purpose once the Dreamland saga ended. He's always been the evil, petty but ultimately half-hearted adversary. Now he's somehow portrayed as super talented/strong but Kirby's too stronk for him so he just sort of exists as his cumrag.

The weird top down party game on 3DS (I forget what it's called) honestly did the best portrayal of him. He hates Kirby, he comes up with a decent plan to get rid of him by 3D printing him but ultimately he fails miserably because he's blind to his pettiness and everyone likes Kirby enough to help him.

Crystal Shards had a good depiction of DDD too: prideful and selfish because he's the king, but he'll set these traits aside for the greater good. Compare the cutscene where he joins you in CS, where he turns his nose up at the thought of joining Kirby until Waddle Dee convinces him (even though Kirby just save his life, versus the opening of Return to Dreamland where he hops right on the opportunity to join Kirby's quest to help this total stranger. To take it a step further, you can even compare the gameplay sections with DDD in CS, where he totes Kirby on his back and smashes through walls and obstacles as if he were showing off because he knows that Kirby isn't strong enough to do this so he needs his help, versus RTDL where he's just along for the ride and not important at all compared to Kirby (kind of like a cumrag).

I hate the way Bowser is portrayed in the main games. He's one step ahead of Mario but only because Mario holds the dumbass ball or he "somehow" procures some 3rd party offscreen. Odyssey is the worst about it. there's no reason why Bowser having a stupid new hat allows Mario to lose to him TWICE besides pointless drama. or how he gets the Dragon to fight you, because fuck logic.

Ironically NSMBWiiU is probably the most entertaining portrayal of mainline Bowser. Mario gets blindsided by the robot fist thing, but Mario gets wise to it and eventually destroys it giving him a clear shot at peach's Castle. There's nothing really retarded or annoying about it and it clearly has a point since he needed the time to fortify Peach's Castle.

Bowser specifically in the RPG games. It was way more interesting seeing different villains and perspectives in games and it got completely neutered in newer games by making him the big bad

What do you think of Bowser in 64? The way he commandeered Peach's castle while Mario wasn't there could be considered an ambush no?

I agreed with you when I was a teenager but I've since realized he's actually pretty solid in most appearances, regardless of how goofy he can be. I'd say Superstar Saga was rock bottom for him and I never liked that game to this day. He wasn't necessarily incompetent in TTYD as much as simply unlucky. In Sunshine, it all came down to wildly inappropriate and laughable voice acting. He was incredible in Galaxy and a dapper, daring motherfucker in Odyssey. His abrupt proposal to Peach after his plans had been thwarted and everything that happened during the game and right in front of Mario was peak Bowser. He's not generally portrayed as an intellectual or with much patience, but he's strong, cunning, and plenty threatening where it counts, most of the time. Being goofy doesn't preclude being dangerous. Super Mario RPG was my favorite take on him to date.

I like Bowser and DDD not being super evil villains, I'm sort of tired of world ending mega-hitlers.

Bowser legit wanting to marry peach in odyssey was a little cute, and I do actually like the idea of Bowser having a rivalry with Mario.

It's very Venture Brothers.

I loved Superstar Bowser because it actually gave him Charisma.

What? He was a retard for 1/2 the game and then a tranny for the other half.
