You can't start the event before ar20.
Do your adventure guild dailies. Places you can spend resin at will also give ar points.

Then went back to her because the most important thing is that you love your characters.

The game feels like shit because the only thing you get for exploring is the realization that you shouldn't have spent time exploring. Adventure Rank is just annoying and really gets in the way of player freedom in the early game. Nothing kills the drive to see what's over the next hill quite like knowing it's a dungeon you won't be able to go to for several more hours. Also, gating certain challenges and puzzles behind elements you might not have with your free characters, limiting how much you can heal from statues of the seven etc

It's basically like they went out of there way to make the most annoying to play version of Breath of the Wild physically possible
