in 2010 they tried to shut down just normal Brawl being played at a tournament too. Same thing in 2013 with Melee. It was a big deal both times.

Reasonable from a business perspective, for sure. I don't think your strawman is reasonable. Everyone understand Nintendo is in its full right to apply its power, but that really is beside the point. Fans have been mad at Nintendo for a long time now because of their unwillingness to see eye to eye with its fanbase because money gets in the way and even though everyone understands business is business, it just makes it apparent where Nintendo's priority lie and it ia to take monopoly of everything that barely even touch their name and brands regardless of consequences and feelings, which is hard to bear for people who are passionate fans who do what they do out of nothing but pure admiration and love for their legacy. I would understand your point if it was a bunch of people trying to scam money out of Nintendo, but Mario Royale never asked a cent out of anyone, the same goes for AM2R and the non-profit Ultimate wavedash mod.
The thing fans are mad about is when they try to show love to Nintendo and this love gets spat on for legal reasons that really don't need to be so drastic.
Otherwise, it can't be argued. Nintendo will do whatever they want.

Everyone knows what it really is about. Melee is a cancer from Nintendo's viewpoint. They've been trying to kill it since Brawl with no success and they keep doing it now.
Why? Because Smash is for good boys and girls, not autists with something to prove. Nintendo hates the Smash competitve scene and since Melee is the spine of the whole scene, they figure killing Melee will deal a critical blow to the tryhards.
If Smash has the reputation of a Esport series, less casuals and Timmy's parents will want to buy the game. Every tourneyfag autist has known this for decades now.

if this was like, 10 years ago then sure that would make sense since nintendo use to send C&Ds to people that hosted melee but now? this is beyond reaching, just delusional.

Because Nintendo doesn't want to take a firm stance on the competitive scene because, whether they want it or not, Smash is not JUST a party game and it cannot be. One can say "not a fighting game", but the series was created FROM the idea of competitive fighting games.
Sure, this time around, they decided to give comp autists a few crumbs, but they won't compromise on their idea of letting casuals have their fun too, so the game is not very well balanced from a competitive standpoint. It is very gimmicky and a lot of the Ulti competitive scene hace manu complaints about the game feeling casualized. Those are opinions, of course, but it shows that it's still not a competitive game.
Also, look at how passively they invest into their Esport scene. Official Nintendo Smash tourneys have shitty prizes and anti compautism rulesets. They just want to APPEAR like they back their Esport scene because doing the opposite in 2020 would be retarded, but they really don't care much. Compared to Capcom, which might have made SF5 into an awful game, but they still recognize that SF lives because of tournaments, so they shit money and invest a lot in tournaments and offer actual prize money and care about backing the pro scene.
Again, Nintendo does whatever they want with their own shit, but they also play coy when it comes to the Esports scene and fan projects in general. They shut down everything they feel they don:t have absolute control of and when fans get rightfully pissed, they go back to the legal arguments. That's Nintendo's only actual defense. "It's ours." And, yes, we understand, but it really is not fair to people who are not trying to actually steal money or compete with Nintendo.
