The actual reason nu-Wolfenstein died was that the second game just wasn't as good as the first one and focused a ton on a boring story, while The New Order was short sweet and to the point. Likable characters said what they needed to say then moved on. The devs/publisher then decided to double down on this with Wolfenstein Youngblood which featured damage numbers, a focus on coop play and tons of unnecessary banter.
The internet outrage version of this is the marketing team tried to pander to leftists and with a functional brain saw right through it. We all know Nazis are bad, you tried to tie current political events into your marketing and failed miserably. Should've just stuck to the alt history angle.

Doom's always been the more popular series. Wolfenstein is a series you had to grow up with to really love, otherwise they're hard games to go back to due to abundant hitscanners and unforgiving difficulty. I personally think Wolf 3D, RTCW, ET, and even Wolf 09 are great games, but I grew up with those games, not Doom. Wolfenstein has always been the more tacticool older brother of Doom, and a casual gamer who's used to playing Doom is likely not going to find any fun playing Wolfenstein games. That brings us to the 2010 games. The New Order is going to be most people's first Wolfenstein experience, and it did a great job at making the series relevant again for those types of gamers.

Then they fucked it all up with TNC's marketing, as well as the game itself. People don't play Wolfenstein to watch a movie, and that's what we got. Congrats MachineGames. You alienated both the hardcore Wolfenstein fans and the newer fans of the series. Notice there's no hype for Wolfenstein 3. They blew it.
